Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
For a second consecutive night Pawtucket walked-off with a come-from-behind win, defeating the Norfolk Tides 8-7. The attendance was announced at 2,510 at McCoy Stadium, but only a handful were on hand when Che-Hsuan Lin's single on the eighth pitch of the at-bat found its way past Tides' second baseman Brendan Harris and into right field to cap off a 5-run ninth inning.
The PawSox, who were 0-17 in 2011 when trailing after eight innings, had eight straight batters reach in the ninth on six hits, a walk and an error. Brent Dlugach, who singled to center field two batters earlier, scored from third base to give Pawtucket the 8-7 win.
Norfolk jumped all over PawSox starting pitcher Kevin Millwood for four runs in the first three innings, and the Tides were in good position to cruise to a victory on a soggy summer night in Rhode Island.
For a second consecutive game, the Pawtucket Red Sox starting pitcher had over a decade of major league experience, but unlike John Lackey Tuesday night, Millwood struggled while operating under a 70-pitch limit.
Millwood, an all-star with the Atlanta Braves in 1999, pitched 2.2 innings in his PawSox debut. On 61 pitches, he allowed five hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts. Millwood, who has a career record of 159-137 with a 4.11 ERA in 14 major league seasons, earned a no-decision.
The PawSox first runs of the ballgame came in the third inning to turn a 4-0 deficit into just a 4-3 deficit. In his second game of the season after being sent down from Boston, Darnell McDonald connected on a three-run home run. The two-out shot to left-center field scored two PawSox, but all three runs were unearned off Tides' starting pitcher Chris Tillman.
A Josh Bell double in the first inning scored Matt Angle for an early 1-0 Norfolk lead. In the third, Norfolk scattered four hits which resulted in three runs- two runs with two outs- to give Norfolk the early 4-0 lead, but it was not enough to withstand the late Pawtucket comeback. Wednesday's game was moved from a 7:05 p.m. start to a 6:05 p.m. start to accommodate Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Vancouver Canucks. After a 1:27 rain delay, the first pitch was thrown at 7:32 p.m. and the two teams played until 9:44 p.m. when the game underwent a second delay which lasted 31 minutes. Total game time, delays included, was five hours, 34 minutes.
The final game of the four game series with the Norfolk Tides will feature Mitch Atkins (1-0, 3.86 ERA) for the Tides against Pawtucket's Kyle Weiland (4-4, 3.46 ERA) before the PawSox hit the road for an eight-game road trip. Thursday night's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
