Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

(Buffalo, NY) - Pawtucket used an eight-run third inning that occurred Monday night before a rain suspension and held off a late Buffalo rally Tuesday for a 9-6 win over the Bisons at Coca-Cola Field. A power outage occured mid-game, however, and forced the postponement of the second game that had been scheduled for Tuesday night. The teams will now complete the three-game series with a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 1:05pm.

The final four innings of the contest were played without power in the majority of the ballpark. There were no functioning scoreboards or videoboards and the stadium lights were not active. Thus the decision was made to postpone the nightcap before the sun set for the evening.

Garin Cecchini slammed his first homerun of the season just two batters into the resumption of the contest to give the PawSox (4-1) a 9-3 lead in the top of the fourth. Pawtucket would not score again and garner only three more hits, but the combination of Noe Ramirez (1-0), Dana Eveland and Heath Hembree were able to hold the lead on the mound.

Ramirez replaced Matt Barnes after the game resumed and worked 3.2 strong innings to earn his first Triple-A win. He allowed one run on two hits while walking three. After Eveland allowed a pair of runs in the eighth to bring Buffalo within 9-6, Hembree entered and recorded the final four outs to pick up his second save in three chances.

After trailing 3-0 through two innings on Monday, the PawSox scored eight times in the top of the third before the rain suspension. Pawtucket picked up seven hits and one walk in the frame in which 13 batters came to the plate, while Buffalo committed three errors during a steady rain and heavy wind. Bisons starter Chad Jenkins (0-1) was charged with all eight tallies (four earned).

Jackie Bradley, Jr.'s RBI single started the run scoring in the third, then two batters later Travis Shaw lined a two-run double to knot the game at 3. A Bryce Brentz sacrifice fly scored Shaw to put Pawtucket in front, and then Garin Cecchini doubled off the left field fence to put a runner in scoring position.

The rally was then aided significantly by defensive miscues by the Bisons. Luke Montz reached on a throwing error by third-baseman Matt Hague to leave runners on the corners. Quintin Berry next grounded an RBI single to plate Cecchini, and Marrero followed with a run-scoring single to chase Jenkins and make the score 6-3.

Rob Rasmussen relieved Jenkins and was greeted by Sean Coyle's RBI infield single. Bradley, Jr. then reached on Munenori Kawasaki's throwing error that allowed Marrero to score the eighth run. Marrero and Coyle each reached twice in the inning.

Barnes, making his season debut, immediately allowed three first inning tallies highlighted by Hague's two-run triple to right. The right-hander then settled down and pitched scoreless ball in the second and third before the rains came.

Each game of Wednesday's twin bill is slated for seven innings. In game one, Pawtucket left-hander Brian Johnson (1-0, 0.00) will get the start against southpaw Jeff Francis (NR). Righty Keith Couch (1-0, 4.50) is expected to start for the PawSox in the nightcap, while the Bisons counter with lefty Andrew Albers (0-1, 7.71). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.

Following the road trip the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a season-opening seven-game homestand, beginning with four games against Rochester starting on Thursday, April 16th. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
