PawSox Take Advantage of Opportunities in 3-2 Victory

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- A ninth-inning combination of poor defense by host Columbus and clutch relief pitching by Pawtucket proved the difference in Tuesday's 3-2 win for the PawSox in front of 10,100 at Huntington Park.

The Sox have won three straight, including the first two contests of their eight-day road trip, and are 42-28, putting them 14 games above .500 for the first time since ending 2012 with a 79-65 record.

This latest triumph concluded with closer Anthony Carter overpowering Chun-Hsiu Chen with a strikeout to leave the bases loaded. Overall, the Clippers stranded 12 and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Carter (S, 10), who's converted all 10 save opportunities, inherited runners at second and third from Ryan Rowland-Smith with two down. After a walk of Cord Phelps on four pitches, Carter blew a two-strike fastball past Chen to preserve a lead that had been gift-wrapped by Columbus.

Facing closer Preston Guilmet in the top of the ninth, Drew Sutton reached on a bouncer misplayed by third baseman Matt Lawson. Sutton was then forced out on Mitch Maier's fielder's choice grounder.

The next batter Bryce Brentz grounded to shortstop Juan Diaz, whose throw was dropped by the second baseman Phelps for the Clippers' second error of the inning. The third resulted from a ground ball by Brandon Snyder to Diaz, who skipped his throw past first, scoring Maier with the eventual winning run.

Following a solid start by lefty Chris Hernandez, Jose De La Torre was credited with the victory. De La Torre (W, 3-1), who was recently reinstated to Pawtucket's roster after returning from his native Puerto Rico for the birth of his child, struck out four in 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The PawSox struck first off Columbus starter Joe Martinez in the top of the fourth inning. Brandon Snyder and Justin Henry each singled, before Dan Butler's single plated the game's first run.

Jackie Bradley Jr. made it 2-0 with a towering homer to right-center, going deep for the third time at Triple-A, while leading off the fifth inning.

Columbus got even in the sixth after producing just one hit and three baserunners overall in the first five innings. With two on and one out, however, Chris Hernandez induced a chopper toward the middle that could have easily led to an inning-ending double play.

But the grounder from Cord Phelps skipped off second baseman Justin Henry into center field. Ruled a single, it scored Matt Carson to draw the Clippers within 2-1. The fourth hit of the inning, a single by Chen loaded the bases for Tim Fedroff, who tied it with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.

After a walk to load the bases again, De La Torre relieved Hernandez and struck out Matt Lawson to preserve the 2-2 score.

The third game of Pawtucket's eight-day road trip is slated for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, when Terry Doyle (4-5, 5.16) faces Trevor Bauer (3-2, 3.84).
