PawSox Take 3 of 4 from Tides After 4-2 Win

(Pawtucket, RI) - Pawtucket starter Allen Webster tossed 7 2/3 dominating innings and combined with two relievers to retire the final 17 Norfolk batters as the PawSox bested the Norfolk Tides, 4-2, Friday night in front of 5,287 fans at McCoy Stadium to finish off a series victory in the four-game set.
Mike Carp, playing in his first game of a Major League injury rehab assignment, played the first four innings as the designated hitter and went 0-for-2. Carp, on the disabled list since June 2nd, is attempting to return to Boston from a broken bone in his right foot.
Webster (4-4), who pitched a Pawtucket-season-high eight innings against Norfolk in a win on May 30th, retired the final 13 batters he faced four weeks later. He allowed two runs in the third but then allowed only one baserunner over the remainder of his outing. He struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk.
Tommy Layne pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his sixth save in as many opportunities. The PawSox (42-41) moved above .500 for the first time since May 24th and won their third series at home this season (3-1-7 in 11 series at McCoy Stadium.)
Pawtucket scored three runs in the second against Tides starter Mike Wright (1-7) to take a lead they would not relinquish. After the game's first run scored on a throwing error, Justin Henry lined a two-out RBI single that made the score 2-0.
The PawSox moved in front 3-0 when Wright uncorked a wild pitch that scored Dan Butler from third base. Travis Shaw's sacrifice fly in the seventh against Norfolk reliever Randy Wolf plated Pawtucket's final run of the night.
The PawSox ten-game homestand continues Saturday as the squad welcomes Durham to McCoy for a four-game series with game one at 6:05 pm. Knuckleball-throwing right-hander Steven Wright (2-1, 1.80) will get the ball for manager Kevin Boles, while righty Merrill Kelly (6-1, 2.71) is expected to start for the Bulls.
