Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Toledo, OH) - Quintin Berry's two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth completed a comeback from 5-0 behind as the Pawtucket Red Sox scored the final six runs to stun the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-5, on Thursday morning and complete a sweep in the three-game series at Fifth Third Field.
Luke Montz tied the score in the eighth with a solo home run and Jackie Bradley, Jr. drove home a pair of runs with a solo blast and an RBI double as the PawSox (18-10) were able to recover from Toledo's five-run second inning. It was the second series sweep of the season for Pawtucket, which also swept Rochester in four games from April 16-19.
Berry's game-winning hit came against reliever Rafael Dolis (1-1) on a hard line drive to left field. It scored Sean Coyle from second base, after Coyle earlier reached on a fielder's choice and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Humberto Quintero had opened the ninth with a single.
Montz drilled a 3-1 pitch from Jose Valdez for a game-tying homer to left with one out in the eighth (3). Zeke Spruill (3-1) pitched scoreless baseball in the eighth and ninth innings for the PawSox to earn the victory, striking out the final two batters Daniel Fields and Dixon Machado to finish his own win.
Toledo batted around and scored five times in the second inning against Pawtucket starter Keith Couch. The frame included RBI hits from Corey Jones, Bryan Holaday and Xavier Avery in addition to a double steal that included a swipe of home plate at the backend from Avery.
But the PawSox broke through in the third against Toledo starter Buck Farmer when Bradley smashed his first long ball of the season out to right field. Travis Shaw's RBI single in the fourth against Farmer made the score 5-2, plating Rusney Castillo who led off the inning with a double.
Pawtucket clawed within one run by scoring a pair of tallies in the seventh. Sean Coyle's RBI groundout made the score 5-3, then Bradley lined a two-out RBI double against Valdez to plate Deven Marrero. Noe Ramirez (one inning, two strikeouts) and Miguel Celestino (two innings) pitched scoreless relief behind Couch before Spruill took over in the eight.
The PawSox next head to Columbus, OH for a three-game weekend series. Game one of the set is scheduled for Friday night with first pitch at 7:15pm. Left-hander Eddie Rodriguez (3-0, 1.82) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Clippers have yet to announce a pitcher.
