Gwinnett Stripers News Release
MOOSIC, PA -The Gwinnett Braves (13-14) won for the fifth time through their first six games in May with a 5-0 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (13-15) Thursday night in the final game of their three-game series at PNC Field.
It was the second shutout by the Gwinnett pitching staff in the past five games, including a 5-0 shutout of the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday at Coolray Field.
This time it was the pitching of right-handed starter Sugar Ray Marimon (W, 2-0) and a pair of right-handed relievers that blanked the RailRiders on five hits.
New York Yankees' lefthander Chris Capuano, pitching on a MLB rehab assignment, was making his first start of the season with the RailRiders. He gave up a two-out double to left field to Braeden Schlehuber with two outs in the top of the second. Eury Perez followed with a double to deep center, scoring Schlehuber for a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth with right-hander Danny Burawa on the mound for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Adonis Garcia led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to seven games. He stole second, went to third on a fly ball to center by Cedric Hunter and scored from third on a groundout to short by Elmer Reyes for a 2-0 Gwinnett lead. Reyes moved to third when Barrett Kleinknecht singled to right and scored on a squeeze bunt by Joe Benson to up the score to 3-0.
In the top of the seventh, again against Burawa, Perez led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop by Garcia. Gwinnett held a 4-0 as the game entered the eighth inning.
Then, with right-hander Branden Pinder on the mound in the top of the eighth, Perez walked, stole second and scored on a pop out to second. Perez was able to come around to score after Scranton/Wilkes-Barre second baseman Jonathan Galvez threw the ball in the RailRiders dugout after catching a ball hit by Jose Peraza.
Marimon went 6.0 scoreless for the win. He allowed two hits and three walks with five strikeouts. He worked out of trouble twice, once in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded and one out, and again in the bottom of the fourth with runners on second and third and one out. Righty David Carpenter pitched 2.0 innings with one hit and one strikeout, and fellow right-hander Carlos Fisher pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth with two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Capuano (L, 0-1) worked 4.2 innings with four hits and one earned run. He walked two and struck out four. Burawa went 2.0 innings with three hits, three earned runs and one walk. Tyler Webb worked 1.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout. Pinder was credited with one unearned run in 1.0 inning with one strikeout.
At the plate, the G-Braves were paced by Perez who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, an RBI and two stolen bases. Perez now has 16 steals on the season to lead the International League. Garcia was 1-for-4 with one run to up his batting streak to seven games. Peraza now has a six-game hitting streak after a 1-for-5 night.
The RailRiders were led by Ben Gamel and Austin Romine, as each went 2-for-3.
The G-Braves will now open a three-game series in Allentown, PA against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Friday night's game one will have left-hander Manny Banuelos (2-0, 3.42) on the mound for Gwinnett. The Iron Pigs will start right-hander Phillippe Aumont (1-1, 2.25).
