Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Despite stranding a whopping 16 runners, the Pawtucket Red Sox still outscored the Syracuse Chiefs, 5-3, Sunday before an announced crowd of 5,935 at NBT Bank Stadium.
Pawtucket managed just two hits in 13 at-bats with men in scoring position and left the bases loaded three times in the last four innings.
Right fielder Bryce Brentz delivered both of those knocks, including a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. Brentz hammered a 2-and-1 offering off Syracuse starter and former UMass Minuteman Matt Torra (L, 0-3), who was making his second start in the season series. A week earlier, Torra suffered a 10-3 loss at Pawtucket's McCoy Stadium.
Brentz's team-leading 11th home run provided right-hander Brandon Workman a head start en route to a victory in his Triple-A debut. The 24-year-old Workman, who went 5-1 with a 3.43 ERA in 11 games for Double-A Portland, soon got another boost.
Leading off the second, a day after his 15-game hitting streak was snapped by an 0-for-4 performance, Brock Holt pulled his first home run to straight-away right field for a 4-0 lead.
Syracuse closed to within 4-3, following a two-run third, highlighted by Corey Brown's RBI single, and Micah Owings's fourth-inning homer.
Workman (W, 1-0) preserved the advantage before leaving with two on and two outs in the sixth. Alex Wilson rescued him from that jam with an inning-ending strikeout of Chris Rahl. The Chiefs didn't have another baserunner.
Wilson combined with Pedro Beato and Anthony Carter to retire the final 10 Syracuse batters, striking out seven in the process. Carter (S, 9), who's converted all nine save opportunities, fanned the side in the bottom of the ninth.
In the interim, Brentz singled home the PawSox's fifth run in the top of the eighth. Brentz, who finished with two singles to go with his big fly, joined five teammates with multi-hit performances. Among them, Jonathan Diaz went 4-for-4. As for the other PawSox batters, each ended the day with one hit.
The third game of the four-day series is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, when Alfredo Aceves (2-1, 3.52) goes to the post for Pawtucket against Jeff Mandel (1-2, 6.08).
