Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The PawSox jumped on starter and loser Matt Torra in Durham last night, defeating the Bulls 8-2. In the first inning, with two outs, Lars Anderson walked, Ryan Lavarnway was hit by a pitch and Josh Kroeger followed with an epic three run homer deep into the right field grandstand. In the second inning, Jose Iglesias smashed a two run homer over the 32 foot high leftfield wall in Durham. It was the first of the year for the shortstop, and just the second of his career (745 at bats). Kroeger scored again in the fifth on a single by Che-Hsuan Lin. In the ninth, Lavarnway belted a two run double into the left field corner.

Brandon Duckworth worked 6 innings for the win. Duckworth (5-0, 3.95) allowed a pair of solo homers, while striking out 4 and walking none. Garrett Mock chipped in with a pair of scoreless innings of relief and Mark Melancon threw a shutout ninth inning.

The PawSox (26-14) will face the Bulls again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Doug Mathis (2-2) squares off with Lance Pendleton (1-1). Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment (back). Youkilis is slated to DH and is supposed to get three at bats.
