New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Isaac Pavlik fired his second complete-game shutout of the season and Carlos Sosa's walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning made it stand as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the first-place Quebec Capitales 1-0 on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win was Jackals skipper Joe Calfapietra's 500th in his 11-year managerial career.

In front of a spirited crowd of 2,278 fans, Pavlik and Quebec starter Dan Sausville battled to a scoreless draw through eight and a half innings. Jackals' first baseman Jabe Bergeron became the game's first leadoff baserunner in the ninth when he reached on a fielding error by Quebec second baseman Alex Nunez. Calfapietra sent in Jeff Grose to pinch run for Bergeron and with a 3-1 count, Sosa pulled a hit-and-run double off the chalk down the first base line. Grose came around to score from first as the ball rattled around in the right field corner.

Pavlik (7-5) allowed just three hits while fanning a season-high eight batters. The 30-year-old southpaw threw 80 of 114 pitches for strikes, walking his only batter in the ninth inning. Sausville (7-5) took the tough-luck loss after surrendering just one unearned run over eight innings while striking out five batters without a walk. Offensively, New Jersey shortstop Mike DeJesus was the only player to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

The Jackals (17-19 second half, 36-46 overall) and Capitales (30-18 second half, 54-30 overall) play the second of their four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends right-hander Chris Vasami (3-0, 4.29) to the mound for his sixth career start against Quebec southpaw Troy Cate (4-3, 3.38), who has 14 games of Major League experience. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

Worcester's Chris Farley is the owner of a seven-inning shutout. The effort marked Pavlik's ninth complete-game shutout during his six seasons in a Jackals uniform.... The Jackals are now 4-6 against the Capitales, with the teams slated to meet seven more times over the final 10 games of the season... The Jackals six walk-off wins have come at home while they've suffered their four walk-off losses on the road... 379 of Calfapietra's 500 victories have come during his eight-year tenure as New Jersey manager.
