Paulino Earns Fourth Win Of The Season

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - Esterlin Paulino allowed a hit in the bottom of the first and then not again until the bottom of the sixth, earning his fourth win of the season. He pitched seven innings and allowed just the two hits; he walked one and struck out six. The Steamer offense banged out a season high 21 hits and scored 13 runs in support of Paulino.

The Steamers wasted no time after the game in Kill Devil Hills was delayed 50 minutes prior to the start in cracking the scoreboard. Brett Christopher and Joey Wendle both hit singles to start things off. On a Brian Blasik strikeout, Christopher and Wendle both took off on steal attempts. Michael Thomas, the DareDevils catcher threw into left field on the steal attempt and Christopher trotted home to give the Steamers a 1-0 lead. Adam Giacalone knocked in Wendle with a single to give the Steamers a 2-0 lead. Zach Stewart reached on an infield single and Vinnie Mejia singled to load the bases for Nathan Burns. Burns picked up two RBI's with a double to give Edenton a 4-0 lead after just a half inning.

The DareDevils found themselves in a hole when they came to the plate against Esterlin Paulino in the bottom of the first. With one out Tyler Sciacca doubled and was stranded there as Paulino pitched through the hit and error to hold the DareDevils scoreless in the first. Paulino would not allow another hit until the bottom of the sixth.

After taking the second inning off, the Steamers got back on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning against Zach Smith. Zach Stewart singled to begin the rally for Edenton in the third. Vinnie Mejia walked and Nathan Burns singled to the centerfielder Wayne Hawkins. Hawkins fumbled the single and it allowed Stewart to score to give Edenton a 5-0 lead. A few batters later, with one out, Brett Christopher hit a two-run double and it was a 7-0 Steamer lead.

In the top of the fourth Edenton added three more runs. With one out Adam Giacalone hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season to begin the scoring. After a single by Zach Stewart and a one out double by Nathan Burns that pushed Stewart to third base, Outer Banks went to their bullpen. In came Wyatt Brown and Kevin Whitehead greeted him with a two-run double, the third two-run double by a Steamer in the game and it was 10-0 Edenton.

The offensive barrage continued for the Steamers in the top of the sixth. Nathan Burns hit a one out triple and came home to score on an RBI single by Tim Saunders to make it 11-0 Steamers. Brown threw a wild pitch to Brett Christopher that brought home Saunders from third and gave the Steamers a 12-0 lead. The final run came in for the Steamers when Brian Blasik took a bases loaded walk to make it 13-0 Steamers.

Eddie Perkins pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Benny Mejia made his first appearance for the Steamers, pitching the ninth. The DareDevils scored one run in the bottom of the ninth without the luxury of a hit. A lead-off walk and a hit batsman started the rally. Fleishman hit into a fielder's choice that moved Sean O'Hare to third and put runners on first and third. Thomas Zengel hit an RBI ground out to plate O'Hare and cut the lead 13-1. Alexander Aurrichio struck out to end the game.

Esterlin Paulino allowed two hits through seven complete innings for Edenton, allowing no runs on one walk and he struck out six DareDevils, earning his fourth win of the season. Zach Smith took his third loss of the season, lasting only 3.2 innings for Outer Banks. Edenton continued its hot streak, setting a season high in hits with 21 against Outer Banks and recording their sixth shut-out of the season.

Edenton will square off against these very same DareDevils tomorrow night in Edenton, it will be the seventh time in 2011 these two teams will play.

The Edenton Steamers compete during the summer at Historic Hicks Field in downtown Historic Edenton, North Carolina. Heading into its 15th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 44 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
