Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs captured a 3-2 win over the Florence RedWolves on Thursday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium behind an opportunistic offense and a shut-down bullpen.
The SwampDogs held a 3-2 lead after the fifth inning, when Cody Hudson reached on a two-base throwing error from RedWolves secondbaseman Blake Barber, then stole third and scored on a wild throw from catcher Jacob German. Starter Michael Knox (1-4) was charged with the unearned run, which ultimately saddled him with the defeat.
That was all the SwampDogs pitching staff would need. Starter Mike Anarumo (4-0) remained unbeaten, working out of a jam in the sixth inning by striking out Michael Wilson with runners on second and third to preserve the one-run lead. Brandon Huffman then stole the show, striking out all six batters he faced on just 22 total pitches before handing the ball to closer Cody Davis, who stranded the tying run at third base in the ninth to earn his 10th save of the season.
Fayetteville (22-11, 5-0) got on the board first on Davis' double off the wall in the bottom of the first inning. They tacked on another run after Eric Grabe bluffed from third on a shallow fly ball, drawing a throw from RedWolves leftfielder Shane Brown that sailed over the head of German behind the plate, allowing Grabe to score the second run of the game.
Florence (16-17, 1-4) got on the board the next half inning after a throwing error by John Hogan allowed Travis Benn to score what would eventually be an earned run. They then tied it on an RBI double from rightfielder Adam Matthews, but their defense and the SwampDogs untouchable bullpen proved to be too much to overcome.
The SwampDogs now head to Morehead City for the second time in four days to open up the front end of a home-and-home at 7:05 p.m. The Marlins return the trip Saturday, and the first 500 fans will receive a free insulated lunch bag courtesy of Cape Fear Orthopedic on NC State Night. Gates will open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
