July 7, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Forest City Owls News Release

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Strong pitching and timely hitting ruled the night in Thursday's doubleheader at McNair Field between the Asheboro Copperheads and Forest City Owls. The Owls won the first game, 2-0, while the Copperheads took the second contest, 3-1. The Owls are now 3-2 in the second half and 19-13 overall, while the Copperheads own a 1-4 record in the second half and are 17-15 on the year.

Game 1 belonged to Owls starting pitcher Danny Healey (N.C. State). Healey threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while recording two strikeouts and one walk. Asheboro starter Cordell Greene (Washington) also put together a solid outing, tossing five innings and allowing two runs on five hits, striking out three batters and walking one. Healey improved his record to 2-0, while Cordell Greene received his third loss of the season.

The only runs of the game came off the bat of Forest City CF Buddy Sosnoskie (Francis Marion) in the bottom of the fifth inning. With 2B Michael Basil (Indiana) on second base and two outs, Sosnoskie blasted a two-run home run over the wall at right center field. That was all the ammunition Healey needed, securing the 2-0 victory for the Owls in the first half of the doubleheader.

Asheboro starting pitcher Patrick Dolan (Charleston Southern) combined with three relievers to lock down the Owls' bats in the second game. Dolan threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out six batters and walking two. A deck of Zach Bernard (North Carolina), Tanner Merritt (East Carolina), and Corey Deighan (Charleston Southern) held the Owls scoreless and hitless for the remainder of the contest. Deighan earned this third save of the season.

Asheboro catcher Ethan Bennett (Tennessee) kicked off the scoring in the top of the second inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. The Copperheads scored a couple more runs in the top of the fourth inning on Tommy Simis' (Cal St. Northridge) single and Sam Picchiotti's (Wright State) double. The Owls got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Bernard walked Sosnoskie with the bases loaded, allowing Axel Johnson (TCU). Forest City was unable to get the bats going in the last two innings, icing the victory for Asheboro.

The Owls will hit the road tomorrow night, taking on the Martinsville Mustangs at Hooker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
