Patterson's RBI double gives Fisher Cats dramatic 5-4 win

Manchester, NH- Ryan Patterson ripped a two-out RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 4-4 tie and lift the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to their first victory of the season, 5-4, over the Connecticut Defenders before 3,071 fans at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Friday night.

Eric Nielsen (1-for-3, 2 R, BB) led off the inning with a bunt single off losing pitcher Kelvin Pichardo. After Josh Kreuzer (0-for-3, BB) drew a walk and Brian Jeroloman (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) flied out, Patterson (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) doubled into the corner, scoring Nielsen. Kreuzer was thrown out attempting to score.

Left-hander Jo Matumoto (1-0) notched the victory, holding Connecticut (5-3) scoreless on one hit over three innings of work. He struck out two and did not allow a walk.

Right-hander Sean Stidfole retired the side in order in the ninth inning to record the save, his first since August 3, 2006 for the Class-A Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League.

Pichardo (0-1) allowed one run on one hit in 2.1 innings to suffer the defeat. The right-hander struck out three and walked two.

New Hampshire (1-6) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning against right-hander Dave McKae to erase a 1-0 deficit. Aaron Mathews (1-for-2, 2 BB, R) walked, Scott Campbell reached on shortstop Trey Webb's throwing error and Nielsen walked.

Kyle Phillips (1-for-4, 2 RBI, R) lined a single to centerfield, scoring Mathews and Campbell. Nielsen also scored when the ball was misplayed by Defenders' centerfielder Antoan Richardson. One out later, Phillips scored the fourth run of the inning on Jeroloman's two-out double to right.

Connecticut tied the game 4-4 with one out in the top of the fifth inning when Carlos Sosa (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) belted a three-run home run off Fisher Cats' starter Brandon Magee deep over the right field wall, scoring Travis Denker (3-for-5, R) and Travis Ishikawa (1-for-5, R, RBI), who began the inning with back-to-back singles.

In the top of the first inning, Richardson walked, Denker singled and Ishikawa grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice to stake Connecticut to a 1-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats look to make it back-to-back victories when left-hander Ricky Romero (0-1, 7.36) takes the mound against Connecticut right-hander Joey Martinez (0-1, 16.20) at 1:05pm. NOTE: Late Thursday night, left-handed pitcher Jesse Carlson became the 24th former New Hampshire Fisher Cat to make his Major League debut when he pitched 1/3 of an inning in the Toronto Blue Jays' 3-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Carlson, 27, set a New Hampshire club record by reeling off 32 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run in 2005. Last season, Carlson established another franchise record by making 58 relief appearances, the most in the Eastern League. The Kensington, CT native became the first Fisher Cats' alumnus to reach the Major Leagues since pitcher Josh Banks on September 11, 2007.
