Huntsville Havoc News Release
HUNTSVILLE, AL - Huntsville Havoc head coach John Gibson announced today that the team has re-signed forwards James Patterson and Steve Hynes.
Patterson (6-2, 215) will be in his eighth season of professional hockey and his fifth in a Huntsville uniform. He led the team in points (74) and was second in goals scored (26) last season for the Havoc. He finished seventh in the SPHL in points and tied for sixth in assists.
"James has been one of the corner stones of our team for the last three seasons," Gibson said. "He is a dominant player in the league and has scored or assisted on some of our biggest goals when we needed them. He is our leader on and off the ice and with his intended pre-season commitment to training and winning a championship there is no reason he shouldn't top the 100-point mark this year. We are fortunate he calls Huntsville home and I am looking forward to working with him on bringing a championship back to our fans."
He has played in 429 career games and scored 221 goals and recorded 330 assists. He has appeared in 35 career playoff games and scored 15 goals and recorded 25 assists. He scored 45 goals and had 49 assists from 1995-1999 at the University of Denver.
"Coach Gibson and I have a lot of history together and he is one of the reasons I wanted to play again," Patterson said. "I want to win another ring. This organization and the fans deserve a championship. With my family here, it is important for me for my kids to get to see me play again."
Hynes (5-9, 175) played in all 56 games for the Havoc last season, his first season in professional hockey. He scored 11 goals and recorded 21 assists. He also had 41 penalty minutes. He recorded one assist in five playoff games.
"Steve had a great playoff last year," Gibson said. "His effort shift in and shift out, especially on the penalty kill, still sticks in my mind. He will be coming in as a second year player with confidence so it is going to be key for him to get off to a good start."
The Havoc also announced they will play two exhibition games with the Knoxville Ice Bears. The first meeting will be held in Knoxville on Friday, October 20 at 7:30 EST. The second game will be held in Huntsville on Sunday, October 22 at 2:00 CST at the Von Braun Center. Tickets are $5.00 and all seating will be general admission. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, October 4th at the VBC Box Office.
"I have found in my young coaching career that a lot can be learned by watching players compete in an exhibition game versus practice," Gibson said. "We are glad to be able to schedule a couple games with our arch rival Knoxville and refuel that fire, not that it needs much stoking."
