Pats Lose Hard Fought Battle 4-2 to Rebels

Red Deer, Alta. - The Regina Pats had a third period tie escape them in the third period, losing 4-2 to the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

Easton Armstrong and Borya Valis scored for the Pats, while Matthew Kieper stopped 19 shots in the loss.

Kai Uchacz led the way for the Rebels with two goals. Carter Anderson and Jace Isley (empty-netter) added singles for the victorious Rebels. Kyle Kelsey was impressive in net, stopping 33 shots in the win.

THE GOALS

First Period

RDR 0-1 at 15:16 - Kai Uchacz (2), assisted by Kalan Lind and Tanner Brown (PP) // Lind and Uchacz entered the Pats zone with speed and worked a give-and-go play through the Pats defence, where Uchacz beat Matthew Kieper to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.

Second Period

REG 1-1 at 9:34 - Easton Armstrong (2), assisted by Stanislav Svozil and Connor Bedard (PP) // Bedard fed a pass to Svozil who fired a one-timed slapshot from the point that Armstrong was able to get a piece of the puck to deflect it past Kyle Kelsey to tie the contest at 1-1.

Third Period

RDR 1-2 at 9:04 - Kai Uchacz (3), assisted by Mats Lindgren and Jayden Grubbe // Just as a Rebels short powerplay expired, Red Deer had control in the Pats zone where Uchacz fired a shot from the left circle, through a screen, that beat Kieper to restore the Rebels lead at 2-1.

REG 2-2 at 14:41 - Borya Valis (3), assisted by Braxton Whitehead // From behind the Rebels net, Whitehead flipped the puck over the goal which bounced around, and during a mad scramble, Valis buried the puck to tie the game up at 2-2.

RDR 2-3 at 15:06 - Carter Anderson (3), assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Mats Lindgren // Just 25 seconds after the Pats tied the contest, a long-distance shot was not caught by Kieper and the puck bounced off of his glove to Anderson who tucked it into a wide open Pats cage for a 3-2 Rebels lead.

RDR 2-4 at 19:45 - Jace Isley (1), assisted by Jayden Grubbe and Craig Armstrong (EN) // With the Pats net empty, the Rebels Isley sealed the contest with an empty net marker to grab the 4-2 victory.

NOTES

Matthew Kieper made his first start and appearance of the season.

Stanislav Svozil made his return to the Pats lineup after spending time in the Columbus Blue Jackets training camp and picked up an assist on the Pats first goal and a pair of minor penalties.

The Pats have allowed at least one powerplay goal in each of their first four games and have now scored a powerplay marker in back-to-back games.

Connor Bedard extended his point streak to three games (5G-3A).

Borya Valis (3G-3A) extended his point streak to four games to open the season.

The Pats finish their three-game Alberta swing when they travel to Calgary for a Sunday afternoon affair with the Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Queen City Kids will have one more road game in Brandon on October 5 before their next home contest on Friday, October 7 at 7:00 PM when they host the Winnipeg ICE at the Brandt Centre.
