Short-Handed Royals Shut Out by Silvertips 4-0
October 2, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Victoria Royals News Release
Everett, WA - Goaltender Braden Holt saved all 28 shots against on the way to his first shutout of the season as the Everett Silvertips defeated the Victoria Royals 4-0 on Sunday.
The 'Tips offence was led by forward Jackson Berezowski, who recorded two goals in the game. Forwards Austin Roest and Ben Hemmerling also had big nights for Everett (2-0-0-0), collecting two assists each.
The loss marks the fourth straight defeat to start the year for Victoria (0-4-0-0). Their early season struggles can be partially blamed due to a bout of injuries throughout the lineup, several of whom are set to return soon.
Forward Marcus Almquist as well as defenceman Luke Shipley are the most recent Royals to go down, with both not appearing on the ice on Sunday. Both are expected to play Wednesday in Kelowna.
Meanwhile, team captain Gannon Laroque and veteran forwards Brayden Schuurman, Matthew Hodson and Caleb Wilms all remain scratched while battling on going injuries.
"Our confidence is high despite that result. The number of quality chances we generated was very good, especially in the first, which was an excellent road period," said General Manager and Head Coach Dan Price. "Credit to Holt for keeping those at bay, and credit to Everett for capitalizing on their chances. Everett played very well and pounced on a few errors. We have some fresh bodies coming in Wednesday and our players always get up for the Kelowna rivalry. We'll be ready."
It was a hot start for Everett's Jackson Berezowski, who would count both his goals in the first, striking at the 8:56 mark with his second of the season before making it 2-0 on the powerplay with his third of the year at 12:11.
The 'Tips would grow their lead in the second, bringing the score to 3-0 on forward Ryan Hoefer's first goal of the season at 9:47 of the period.
That would be the only marker by either team in the frame and the game would head to the third with Everett holding on to a three goal advantage.
It was more of the same in the third, which saw Everett seal the win on a goal by Vincent Lamanna at the 17:45 mark of the frame, handing his team the 4-0 shutout victory.
Royals starting goaltender Tyler Palmer made 39 of 43 saves in the loss.
Both teams will be back in action this week as the Silvertips look to stay hot against the Medicine Hat Tigers at home this Friday.
Meanwhile, Victoria will head back north of the border for another road matchup against the Kelowna Rockets this Wednesday night.
Puck drop for that contest is set for 7:05 pm on Wednesday, October 5 at Prospera Place in Kelowna.
The next set of home games for the Royals will take place on October 11 and 12 against the Kelowna Rockets. Tickets are available at selectyourtickets.com.
