Saskatoon Blades News Release
REGINA, SK - A pair of second-period markers, and a 22-save performance from Nolan Maier wasn't enough as the Saskatoon Blades were edged by the Regina Pats 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Saskatoon (14-3-2-1) received goals from forwards Caiden Daley and Brandon Lisowsky, along with assists from Evan Patrician, Rhett Rhinehart, and Charlie Wright in what's their second loss in a row.
They'll try to get back on track Thursday night against their rivals, the Prince Albert Raiders.
Regina (8-9-2-1) notched three goals in the second period, coming off the sticks of Carter Chorney, Layton Feist, and Carson Denomie. Goaltender Roddy Ross made 22 saves to earn the victory, and Kyle Walker iced the game with an empty-net marker late in the game.
This puts a bow on the season series between the two teams, with Saskatoon winning three out of four contests.
The Blades were unsuccessful on six powerplay opportunities, and killed off all five penalties.
After a scoreless first period, it took just 38 seconds of play in the second period for Caiden Daley to break the scoreless tie. The Blades alternate captain deflected a long shot from defenceman Rhett Rhinehart that bobbled its way through Ross and over the goal line.
It's the 13th time the Blades have opened the scoring this season, but the lead didn't last long.
Less than four minutes later, Carter Chorney used his speed to generate a shorthanded breakaway. The veteran forward found a small hole above the glove of Maier, locking the game 1-1.
Regina took their first lead of the game 8:30 into the second period off a needle-threading shot from Layton Feist. The Dawson Creek, BC product made a swift move around a Blades defender before snapping a high shot short-side off the cross-bar and in, giving the Pats a 2-1 lead.
Rookie Brandon Lisowsky squared the match up four minutes later, taking a neutral zone feed from Evan Patrician. The 17-year-old made no mistake firing off a quick shot top-corner on Ross, tying things up 2-2.
But the scoring fiasco in the 2nd period wouldn't end there. With 2:36 left, Carson Denomie was parked in the slot when Evans fed him the puck, and quickly sent a hard shot over the glove of Maier to give Regina a 3-2 lead heading into the third.
Denomie's second-period marker, which ties him for the league lead in goals at 13, would end up being the game-winner.
Kyle Walker sealed the deal with an empty netter with just over a minute remaining.
Saskatoon will try to return to the win column on Tuesday afternoon, when they battle their rivals the Prince Albert Raiders at the Subway WHL Hub at 4:00pm MT.
