Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Regina, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders (7-10-2-1) lost a 5-2 game to the Moose Jaw Warriors (8-11-1-0) on Monday night in the Subway Hub Centre at the Brandt Centre in Regina.
It was the final meeting of the Hub Centre between the Raiders and the Warriors. The Raiders took five of eight points from the Warriors this season.
Evan Herman and Reece Vitelli scored the Raiders' goals in the loss.
The Raiders opened the scoring just 1:20 into the contest. Brayden Yager's pass to the point got away from Cory King at their offensive blueline. Herman gave chase and beat the Warriors to the puck, creating a breakaway. He made a move to his backhand and lifted the puck over a sliding Brett Mirwald for his seventh of the season to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage.
Justin Nachbaur nearly extended the Raiders' lead on the power play. He unloaded on a one-timer from the point that beat Mirwald, but found the crossbar and the puck ricocheted out of play.
The Warriors were able to tie things up with 7:05 to play in the opening frame. Atley Calvert threw the puck towards goal. Riley Krane got a piece of the puck as it went towards goal, sending it off Carter Serhyenko's pads. Krane deposited his own rebound to make it 1-1.
In the second, the Warriors took the lead with a two-man advantage. Brad Ginnell fired a shot from the point that was stopped by Serhyenko. The rebound found the stick of Tate Popple at the side of the goal and he potted the rebound to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead 6:52 into the period.
Four minutes later, Moose Jaw extended its lead with a point shot through traffic. Maximus Wanner put a shot towards goal that hit Josh Hoekstra in front of the net and found its way past Serhyenko to put the Warriors up 3-1.
Tayem Gislason saved a goal shortly after to keep his team down two. With Serhyenko sprawled and his pad to the post, Yager jammed at the puck by the pad. Popple followed up and popped it over Serhyenko's pad looking for his second of the game. However, Gislason was in the blue paint and knocked the puck out of the air to keep it out of the goal.
With 2:30 to play in the second, the Warriors struck again. Cade Hayes got to the slot and put a shot on goal that Serhyenko turned aside. Eric Alarie picked up the rebound and his quick attempt got through Serhyenko to give Moose Jaw a 3-1 after two periods.
The Raiders controlled the play in the third period while they worked to get a goal to get back into the game. In the third, they outshot the Warriors 15-3.
Gislason, after making his great defensive play earlier in the game, had a chance at his first WHL goal. He pulled away from the Warriors' backend and found himself in on a breakaway on Mirwald. Gislason worked to his forehand and nearly caught Mirwald, but the Warriors goaltender pinned it under his arm.
Late in the third, Yager streaked around the Raiders' defence on the left wing then picked the far corner over Serhyenko to make it a 5-1 game.
Vitelli added a power-play goal late in the game for the Raiders to round out the scoring. His centering pass from the left corner deflected off Daemon Hunt's skate in front of the Warriors' net and past Mirwald. It was Vitelli's fifth goal of the year and fourth on the power play to round out the scoring at 5-2.
Serhyenko stopped 26 shots in the loss for the Raiders. Mirwald made 29 saves in the win for the Warriors.
The Raiders are off until Thursday afternoon when they take on the Saskatoon Blades for the final time in the Subway Hub Centre. Puck drop is 4 p.m. WHL Live on CHL TV.
