Patriots tame Bears with 8-0 shutout

Bridgewater, NJ -The Somerset Patriots shut out the Newark Bears 8-0 before 4,484 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Monday evening. Patriots first baseman Todd Betts went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI

The Patriots struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Betts singled and came around to score on an RBI double by second baseman Ray Navarrete. Left fielder Pat Boran followed with an RBI single to right to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.

Somerset added a run in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman Jeff Nettles doubled and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Kevin Nicholson to make the score 3-0 Patriots.

The Patriots scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nettles walked and advanced to third on a single by Nicholson. Betts followed with a three-run home run (8) to right field. Navarrete tripled to center field and scored on an RBI single by Boran that gave Somerset a 7-0 lead.

The Patriots tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh inning to increase the lead to 8-0. Designated hitter Emiliano Escandon doubled and came around to score on an error by right fielder Jose Herrera.

Patriots starter Nick Stocks (1-0) picked up the win with five scoreless innings pitched, allowing three hits and recording three strikeouts. Bears starter Andy Zwirchitz (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and six strikeouts.

The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Tuesday, June 28th with a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears. Tuesday's game includes Somerset Medical Center's Healthy Kids Fair.
