June 19, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots (33-23) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (19-35) 5-3 before 6,919 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. With today's attendance, the Somerset Patriots have set a new Atlantic League weekend attendance record with 22,907 fans.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Carlos Guzman continued his hot hitting by driving in two-runs on a triple that gave Somerset back a lost lead from earlier in the frame. It was Guzman's seventh RBI of a series where he hit .583 with a home run and a triple.
"I'm just trying to do my part on the team and let the pieces fall where they may. It was a good series. A good start to something that hopefully leads to a championship because this team has it," said Guzman.
Scott Kelly added another run to the lead in the same inning on an RBI double for the 5-3 final score.
The Patriots took an early lead with a run in the first inning on a single by Bryan LaHair.
Vinny Zarrillo's bloop RBI single in the second inning plated Matt Fields, who had doubled earlier in the frame, to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Blue Crabs cut the lead in half with an RBI single by Darby Myers in the fifth inning.
Southern Maryland took the lead in the eighth inning. Angel Flores reached first on an error that allowed Zach Wilson to score to tie the game. Norberto Susini's RBI single to right field made the score 3-2.
Jeremy McBryde (4-1) picked up the win. Justin Berg (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings pitched. Jon Hunton came on to earn his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
"We had a great home stand. Obviously every game is big from here on out. We're battling with Long Island basically every night," said Hunton. "We had a great group of fans that made it a great atmosphere this weekend and we're really starting to click."
The 2016 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until Monday, June 27th when they return home for a 7:05 pm game against the New Britain Bees.
