Patriots shell Blue Crabs, 8-1

WALDORF , MD- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 8-1 in front of 5,379 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday evening.

Somerset struck first with three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Patriots loaded the bases on a lead off single to left by third baseman Jeff Nettles, a single to center by catcher Jason Belcher and a walk by second baseman Teuris Olivares. First baseman Travis Anderson then forced in Nettles with a walk and Belcher scored on a double play ground ball to third. Centerfielder Sean Smith drove in Olivares with a two out RBI single to right.

The Patriots added a run in the top of the fourth inning to make it 4-0 when Smith drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Somerset loaded the bases on walks to Olivares and Anderson and a bunt single up the third base line by leftfielder Joe Burke.

Southern Maryland plated a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Patriots' lead to 4-1 when leftfielder Richard Giannotti drew a lead off walk, advanced to third on a single to left by third baseman Patrick Osborn and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by first baseman Ken Harvey.

Somerset rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Belcher lined a one out single to center, advanced to second on a walk by Olivares and scored when Anderson crushed a three run home run (6) to left. Smith then drew a two out walk and scampered home on an RBI double down the right field line by shortstop Anthony Granato.

Patriots' starter Jason Standridge (3-3) picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking two in seven innings of work. Blue Crabs' starter Joe Gannon (9-14) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on ten hits while walking eight and striking two no in 6.2 innings pitched.
