
Patriots Defeat Blue Crabs in Front of Season High Crowd

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-2 in front of a season high 8,010 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.
The Patriots jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after right fielder Mike Rodriguez singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by second baseman Matt Hagen.
Somerset added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a double by Hagen for the 2-0 advantage.
The Blue Crabs scored in the top of the fourth inning after a solo homerun by shortstop Travis Garcia (10) to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Patriots scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Third baseman Jeff Nettles singled, catcher Jason Belcher singled, and first baseman Travis Anderson singled to drive home Nettles. Shortstop Elliott Ayala followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Belcher to make the score 4-1.
Somerset added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning after Rodriguez reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Josh Pressley for the 5-1 lead.
Southern Maryland added a run in the top of the ninth after catcher Lance Burkhart tripled and first baseman Octavio Martinez hit into a fielder's choice to drive him home for the 5-2 final.
Patriots starter Jim Magrane improved his record to 8-0 after allowing an earned run on five hits and eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Blue Crabs starter Joe Gannon (5-6) got the loss after surrendering four earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Saturday night with a 7:05 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
