Camden Riversharks News Release

The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Newark Bears by a final score of 3-2 today, as the visitors rallied in the final inning to steal the win. Newark reliever Cory Willey (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. The loss was charged to Camden's Tracy Thorpe (0-3), who allowed the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning. Newark's Armando Benitez sealed the win with a scoreless ninth, picking up his first fourth of the season. With the loss, the Riversharks's season tally falls to 23-30, while Newark improves to 29-24.

The Riversharks drew first blood in this contest, and jumped out to a one 1-0 lead in the third inning. Left fielder Wayne Lydon drew a one out walk, and then stole second base to work himself into scoring position. The next batter was second baseman Junior Spivey, who laced a single to right field, driving home Lydon, and giving the home team the lead.

The Sharks added to their lead in the fourth inning, courtesy of some good hitting and some good luck. Designated hitter Vito Chiaravollotti lead off with a triple to right field, and then scored on a wild pitch by Newark pitcher Jose Garcia, giving Camden a 2-0 lead.

The Bears pulled back a run in the seventh inning, after they finally recorded their first hit of the game. Right fielder Jacques Jones singled to centerfield, and then scored when Soloman Manriguez followed suit two batters later. The RBI was Manriguez's 17th of the season, and cut Camden's lead to one run.

With a one run lead heading into the final inning, the Riversharks put the game in the hands of closer Tracy Thorpe, who could not manage to close the door on the Bears. Newark's Tike Redman leadoff the inning with bloop single to left field, and advance to second when Thorpe's pick off throw sailed into the bleachers. Redman then made his way to third base on a wild pitch by Thorpe, and eventually scored when Charlton Jimerson doubled to center. With the game tied, and a runner in scoring position, Manriguez singled to center and drove in the go ahead run, giving the visitors a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

The Riversharks and Bears will play game two of their three game series tomorrow night at 5:35pm. Right handed pitcher Nate Bump (7-2, 2.04) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and will be opposed by righty Edgar Martinez (1-2, 6.16) from Newark.
