
Patriots' Crockett pitches complete game shutout in 7-0 win

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots starting pitcher Ben Crockett (3-2) pitched a complete game shutout to defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish 7-0 before 6,847 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
Crockett allowed five hits and six strikeouts in nine innings pitched for Somerset.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Right fielder Pat Boran walked and advanced to third on center fielder Mike Lockwood's double. Shortstop Kevin Nicholson reached on a fielder's choice, and a bases loaded walk to left fielder Larry Barnes plated Boran.
Somerset added two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Lockwood doubled and scored on third baseman Jeff Nettles two-run home run (6) to make the score 3-0.
The Patriots increased the lead with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. First baseman Jim Burt doubled and second baseman George Sandel reached on an error. Sandel stole second to put runners on second and third. Lockwood drew a walk to load the bases, and Nicholson followed with a two-run single. Nettles and Barnes each had RBI singles to give Somerset a 7-0 advantage.
Bridgeport starter Kevin Hodges (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, three earned on seven hits in four innings pitched.
The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday afternoon with a 1:35 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Sunday 's game includes Baseballs for the first 2,000 fans in attendance, courtesy of AAA.
