
Surf split doubleheader with Bears

ATLANTIC CITY _ The Atlantic City Surf and the Newark Bears split a doubleheader Saturday at Bernie Robbins Stadium. Atlantic City won the first game 12-2 and Newark took the second game in 9-6 in eight innings.
Atlantic City is 21-14 after the split; Newark is 11-24. The Bears avoided a sweep in the second game by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh off Ben Grezlovski and three more off the Surf closer in the eighth on a three-run homer by Will Pennyfeather. The Bears scored the tying run in the top of the seventh when Grezlovski uncorked a wild pitch with the count 3-0 on the Bears Marcos Sanchez. Earlier in the inning Al Benjamin had doubled home Pennyfeather who had led off the inning with a single to make it 6-5.
In the first game of the doubleheader; Atlantic City routed Newark 12-2 behind a five-RBI afternoon by Joe Jiannetti. Jiannetti had two RBIs in the first inning and clubbed his fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth, to give him nine RBIs in the last two games. Atlantic City also got a homer from Todd Leathers, a three-run blast in the fifth which was his sixth of the year. Raul Marval was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Atlantic City in the first game and two runs scored for the Surf. Lincoln Mikkelsen worked seven innings and and allowed eight hits and two earned runs to pick up his third win for the Surf in the first game. Pat Daneker, 2-3, took the loss for Newark in game one. Daneker gave up 10 hits and 10 runs, nine of them earned, in 3 2/3 innings of work in the first game.
The two teams will finish the series at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday at Bernie Robbins Stadium where Newark's Joe Gannon will face Atlantic City's Andy High.
