Pennyfeather's three-run banana gives Bears split
June 10, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Newark Bears News Release
The Newark Bears split a doubleheader on Saturday with the Atlantic City Surf at Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City, NJ. Right fielder Will Pennyfeather capped off a 5-for-8 day with a 3-run home run in the top of the 8th in game two to give the visiting Bears the 9-6 win in their first doubleheader split of the season.
The Bears lost game one by a final count of 12-2. Joe Jiannetti and Todd Leathers both connected for 3-run home runs for the Surf. Lincoln Mikkelsen (3-1) pitched a complete game of seven innings for the Surf, but saw his ERA rise after the Bears plated two runs in the top of the third to tie the game at two. Jose Herrera and Dario Delgado led the way offensively in game one for the Bears, each notching a pair of singles.
In game two, the Bears offense thrived, pounding out a season-high fifteen hits. Pennyfeather went 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs. Lipso Nava, Herrera, Al Benjamin and Marcos Sanchez all had multiple hits in game two. The Bears plated runs in every inning except the first and the fifth, including five runs off Surf closer Ben Grezlovski in the final two frames. Grezlovski (1-1) worked two innings, but surrendered the tying runs in the top of the seventh and Pennyfeather's three-run homer in the top of the eighth. This marked the first time the Bears had come from behind to win a game after trailing in the last two innings all season.
But the big story of game two was the three-inning relief appearance by Jeremy Hill. Hill (1-1) stumped the Surf bats after their four-run fifth inning. He allowed no hits and struck out three to earn the win. Hill, normally subject to some wildness, walked only one batter. He did not hit a batter nor throw any wild pitches in his three innings of work. The Bears were only able to come back and win because Hill shut the Surf offense down for the remainder of the evening.
Bears starting pitching struggled all day. In game one, Pat Daneker (2-3) allowed ten of the twelve runs the Surf scored. Game two starter Hateuy Mendoza allowed all six Surf runs in four and a third innings of work.
The Bears will look to split the series tomorrow in the finale of this four-game set. Manager Chris Jones will send RHP Joe Gannon (2-1) and his knuckleball to the hill for the Bears. Andy High (2-0) is scheduled to start for the Surf.
