FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - As the world faces new challenges due to the spread of coronavirus, the New England Patriots and New England Revolution have teamed up to launch a special edition of "Read Between the Lines," encouraging students to continue their reading and education while they practice social distancing at home.
Over the past few summers, the New England Patriots Foundation and the Patriots Hall of Fame presented by Raytheon have hosted a summer reading program called "Read Between the Lines." The program challenges students to spend at least 1,000 minutes reading during the summer months. Students who have completed the challenge have enjoyed meet-and-greets with Patriots players and other exclusive prizes.
In this special edition of Read Between the Lines, students in grades K-12 will be provided with a reading log featuring a series of reading and education-related challenges. From reading to a friend on the phone to participating in an essay contest, students will be asked to complete 16 different challenges. Once they check off all of the challenges and submit their reading log, they will be entered to win exclusive prizes from the Patriots and Revolution, including tickets to a future game.
Current and former Patriots players, Revolution players and Patriots cheerleaders have also joined the effort and are encouraging students to read. The special guests have shared videos of themselves reading some of their favorite childhood books. Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman recently shared a video of himself reading his book, "Flying High 3" to his daughter. Edelman's video and other videos have been posted on the Patriots website, with more reading videos to come.
All Read Between the Lines reading logs are due by Monday, May 4. They must be submitted to education@patriots.com with the subject line "Reading Blitz." Students can also get involved by sharing their progress on social media by using the hashtags #PatriotsRead and #RevsRead.
As part of this Read Between the Lines program, students and teachers can also access a variety of educational resources to ensure that learning continues. This includes activities through The Patriots Hall of Fame presented by Raytheon, Character Playbook powered by EverFi, Boys & Girls Clubs, online reading resources and other active learning programs.
