Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots (1-1) and the New Britain Bees (1-1) split the opening games of the season in Saturday night's double-header at TD Bank Ballpark.
Game 1:
A late rally in the opener led New Britain to an 8-4 victory. Tied at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning, the Bees scored four runs on a two-run single by Alejandro De Aza and two wild pitches by Zech Zinicola that led to the win.
New Britain had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Jason Rogers and a sacrifice fly by Bijan Rademacher.
In his first at bat as a Patriot, Rey Navarro launched a solo home run (1) off the scoreboard to cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the frame.
An RBI double by Mike Fransoso and an RBI single by Steve Nyisztor put Somerset up 4-3 after two innings of play.
The Bees tied up the game on a solo home run by Ozzie Martinez (1) in the top of the third inning.
Jim Fuller (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Zinicola (0-1) suffered the loss allowing four unearned runs in 0.2 innings pitched.
Game 2:
Somerset's bats exploded for a 14-2 win in the second game.
The Patriots took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Kengor and Ramon Flores will later score on a passed ball.
Tyler Clark cut the lead in half with a home run (1) in the top of the third inning that made it a 2-1 ballgame.
Somerset extended the lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Kengor.
Alfredo Rodriguez's two-run single, combined with a sacrifice fly by Flores, extended the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Patriots broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth inning. Justin Pacchioli started the scoring with a sacrifice fly and Craig Massey then hit an RBI single. The big hit of the inning was a bases-clearing three-run triple by Flores. An RBI groundout by Kengor made the score 12-1.
"Coming back in the second game really shows the team chemistry we have already," said Kengor. "It was a team effort from top to bottom. I think we have a really good lineup one through nine. It might not be a conventional lineup. We might not have as much power as other teams, but we have a bunch of guys that can swing the bat."
Rodriguez struck again with a second two-run single that made the score 14-1 after the sixth inning.
Jovan Rosa's RBI double in the top of the seventh inning made the score 14-2, which would be the final.
David Kubiak (1-0) allowed a run on four hits and struck out four batters to earn the win. Christian Friedrich (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
The 2019 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:05 pm game against the New Britain Bees on Sunday, April 28th. The game includes an appearance by Paw Patrol's Chase and Marshall and Girls Softball Day. There will also be a pre-game autograph session and everyone gets to Run The Bases after the game.
