Patrick Guay's Hat-Trick Leads the Charge for Islanders in Strong Bounce Back
November 28, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
This afternoon the Islanders geared up to take on their second out of six straight Quebec-based opponents in the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Today was family day at the Eastlink Centre and with the Isles hungry to get back into the win column, fans were in for a fun and competitive game if it resembled the two teams' first meeting at all. The first meeting over in Blainville saw the Islanders prevailing with a comeback in the final frame to win the bout 4-3. With Charlottetown eager to get back in the win column quickly, and the Armada craving revenge for the loss in their home barn as well as wanting to leave the Maritimes on a high note, this afternoon's matinee action was sure to be a wild one.
Period one held all the goals and action that we anticipated on seeing. Both teams came out of the gate aggressive which led to multiple scrums resulted in minors and majors as well as a goalie takeout when Gallant cut a corner too hard and collided with Gravel. It was a heated first with even fancier goals. First one to bury a puck in the net was Lukas Cormier. Cormier got the puck in the slot before eyeing up the perfect place to send that puck which ended up being top cheddar over the blocker shoulder of Gravel. Assisting on Cormier's eleventh of the season were Xavier Simoneau and Drew Elliott. Next up to laser one home was a part of the opposition, unfortunately. Miguel Touringy continued his tear when he broke in down the right side before sniping one bar down on Goobie right past his ear from the short side. The helper was given to Charles-Edward Gravel. At 18:46 into the opening frame is when Mr. Powerplay struck again, Patrick Guay held onto a nice feed just long enough to line up the snapshot and send it into the net past a sprawling Gravel. Assisting on Guay's fifteenth tally were Xavier Simoneau and Lukas Cormier.
Shots after the opening frame favored the Isles 14-6.
The second frame settled down a fair bit when you take into consideration how rough the first frame was. There was still a fair share of minors but no powerplay goals for either side in this one. There was one goal and thankfully, it was for the home side. Matt McQuaid sent a wrist shot towards the net through traffic from the blueline, and fortunately for Patrick Guay, the rebound fell right at his feet. Guay picked up the loose puck and tucked it home around the pad of Gravel for his second of the game. Assisting on the tally that put the Islanders up 3-1 were Matt McQuaid and Jakub Brabenec.
Shots going into the final frame were in favor of the Isles 25-16.
It was the captain coming up with a big insurance goal in the final frame. Brett Budgell found himself with the puck in the slot and was able to fire one right over the blocker of Gravel to push his team out front 4-1. Assisting on Budgell's eleventh of the season was Lukas Cormier. At 11:53 into the final frame, the Armada decided they weren't going home with just one goal in this game. Simon Pinard was able to sneak in behind the Isles D and laser one top shelf right over the glove of Goobie. Helpers on the Pinard goal went to Felix Larose and Felix Poulin. With just under two minutes to play in the final frame, it was Mr. Powerplay going back to work. Patrick Guay launched another one-timer past Gravel to cap off his stellar performance with a hat-trick. His favorite set-up man Xavier Simoneau was one of the helping hands with Lukas Cormier being credited as well.
Final shots favored the Isles 37-21.
The Islanders were able to bounce back nicely after losing 4-1 Friday night to the Quebec Remparts with a big scoring outburst in this one. Patrick Guay and Xavier Simoneau continue to be a lethal one-two-punch for the Isles and Lukas Cormier showed up big with three helpers as well. Jacob Goobie managed to stop 19 of 21 shots faced to keep his team ahead. The Islanders are back in action this Wednesday when they make the trip up to Gatineau.
When asked about Patrick Guay's team impact and success so far coach Hulton had this to say. "Patty has been fantastic, it's great to see his confidence peaking right now. He's always had a terrific shot and a quick release and he's using it a lot more. He and Simoneau have such great chemistry, it's a perfect duo when you have a set-up guy like Simoneau making seam passes through and Patty's quick-release one-timer. They worked it to perfection a couple of times today."
Three Stars of the Game:
Lukas Cormier(CHA)- 1 goal, 3 assists.
Patrick Guay(CHA)- Hat Trick.
Xavier Simoneau(CHA)- 3 assists.
"It was a good bounce back, you know I thought we came out with good energy in the first period and had a big powerplay goal at the end to go up 2-1. I thought we played a good solid 60 minutes." Head Coach Jim Hulton on his squad's effort against Blainville.
