
Palm Beach Loses in Extra Innings

Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals (39-51, 7-15) and the Clearwater Threshers (53-37, 14-8) went back and forth for thirteen innings before Clearwater prevailed in a 5-3 victory.
The Rundown
Austin Gomber got the start for the Cardinals on Friday afternoon and pitched six solid innings. He gave up one run on five hits, walking two and striking out eight.
The Cardinals got one the board first in the second inning as Thomas Spitz hit a monster shot over the left field wall. The Cardinals would lead 1-0 after two.
Clearwater started the third with a single and double by Chace Numata and Jiandido Tromp. Numata later scored on a groundout to second by Chris Tocci to tie the game in the third. The Cardinals had a chance in the bottom of the frame to score as Darren Seferina reached on a one-out single. The inning ended with Michael Pritchard grounding into a double play.
The Threshers threatened again in the top of the fifth as Mitch Walding started with a single and Numata hit a double to put runners at second and third. Gomber then got Tromp to pop one straight up, struck out Drew Stankiewicz, and Tocci to fly out to right to leave both runners stranded at second and third.
Clearwater threatened once more in the sixth. Scott Kingery hit a one out single off Gomber, Gomber then got a fly out to left and followed it up with eight straight balls to load the bases. Gomber then battled back to record his eighth and final strike out to leave the bases loaded in the 6th.
In the bottom of the sixth the Cardinals looked poised to take the lead back. Cole Lankford hit a one out single and Casey Grayson reached on a walk. Lankford advanced to third on a wild pitch. Andrew Brodbeck then hit a fly ball to shallow centerfield and Lankford tried to score but was thrown out at the plate to end the sixth.
Davis Ward, Chandler Hawkins, Landon Beck and Cody Schumacher then worked six straight scoreless innings for the Beach Birds.
The thirteenth is when everything came unraveled. Kyle Martin got the Threshers going with a leadoff single and got to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Derek Campbell. Schumacher then intentionally walked Walding to set up the double play. Numata took a 0-1 count to deep center for a bases clearing triple to take a 3-1 lead. Tromp brought in Numata on a ground rule double. Tromp advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Sacrifice Fly from Stankiewicz. The Threshers would take the 5-1 lead into the bottom of the thirteenth.
Lankford got on base with his fifth hit of the game on a one out single to center. Grayson followed with his second walk of the game and Spitz walked as well to load the bases with one out. Lankford scored as Brodbeck reached on an error by Stankiewicz. Bean drove in Grayson on a sacrifice fly to right moving Spitz to third. With Mercado facing am 0-2 count, Brodbeck tried to steal second and was thrown out to end the game. The Cardinals would be defeated by a final of 5-3 in thirteen.
