Clearwater Threshers News Release

The Clearwater Threshers used a four-run 13th inning to get past the Palm Beach Cardinals, 5-3 on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The victory tied a season-high six-game winning streak.

Chace Numata led the way offensively for Clearwater (14-8). Numata finished with four hits, including the go-ahead two-run triple in the top of the 13th.

The Threshers fell behind early after Palm Beach's (7-15) Thomas Spitz cracked a solo home run, his first, off of Threshers' starter Shane Watson in the second inning.

The Cardinals lead didn't last long. Clearwater responded in the very next frame when Carlos Tocci knocked in his 35th RBI of the season on a groundout that drove in Numata.

Clearwater's pitching staff took over from there. Watson ended up with a no-decision but tossed six innings. Clearwater's right-hander surrendered just one run on six hits and has now lasted at least six innings in his last five starts.

The score remained tied at one until the 13th, thanks to five scoreless innings out of the bullpen from Ulises Joaquin, Victor Arano and Matt Hockenberry. The trio combined to allow only three hits while striking out five.

Kyle Martin started the Threshers' rally in the 13th with a leadoff single. After Cody Schumacher intentionally walked Mitch Walding to put runners at first and second with one out, Numata stepped in and delivered.

Numata drove a two-run triple to center that scored both Martin and Walding and put the Threshers ahead, 3-1.

Clearwater tacked on two more insurance runs off of Schumacher (1-1) after Jiandido Tromp drove in Numata with a ground-rule double. Drew Stankiewicz followed that up with a sacrifice fly that scored Tromp.

The Threshers turned to Jesen Therrien to shut the door in the bottom of the 13th, but the Cardinals didn't go away quietly. Palm Beach loaded the bases against Therrien (2-2) with one out and brought the tying run to the plate.

After an error and a sacrifice fly brought the Cardinals within two, it was Numata who fittingly ended the game by throwing out Andrew Brodbeck trying to steal second.

Clearwater looks to sweep the four-game series against Palm Beach on Saturday, with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m.
