Pagan Drives in Five, Pelicans Take Series from Shorebirds

Sunday shaped up to be a beautiful day for baseball following two days of rain as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the Delmarva Shorebirds split the two games. Delmarva won the resumption of Friday's game 9-8 with Myrtle Beach taking the following 7-inning game 12-2 to win the series 4-2. After Sunday's games, the Pelicans' record stood at 36-15 with a two-game lead in the Carolina League Southern Division standings. The Shorebirds' record stands at 18-33 after the six-game set.

Game One: After rain started pouring down in the middle of the fourth inning on Friday, the Pelicans and Shorebirds were forced to finish the game on Sunday with Delmarva winning 9-8. The Pelicans racked up 14 hits with James Triantos (3-5, RBI) leading the group with three singles. Reginald Preciado (2-4, 3B, 3 RBI) drove in three with an RBI single and two-run triple.

Friday's starter Richard Gallardo (4-3) took the loss with five runs, four earned through three innings off six hits and two walks in his outing. The bullpen allowed four runs off four more hits and five walks, while the Pelicans pitching staff hit five batters with pitches.

Delmarva turned 10 hits into nine runs with all but one hit being singles. Trendon Craig (2-5, 2 RBI, 2 R) led the visitors with two RBI and two hits. Brayan Hernandez (2-4, RBI, R, BB) posted the other multi-hit game for the Shorebirds.

The decision went to Thomas Girard (2-0) who pitched one scoreless inning on Friday before the rain. Preston Price earned the save after allowing two hits in his 2/3 innings and no runs.

Delmarva opened with two runs in the opening frame. Elio Prado singled to left and moved to second on a wild pitch by Gallardo. Prado got to third on a groundout by Mishael Deson. The bases loaded with two outs on a walk to Isaac Bellony and a hit by pitch on Isaac De Leon. Craig stepped up and lined a single to right field to score Prado. Bellony was caught in a rundown between home and third but was able to score on an interference call on Gallardo. The Shorebirds carried a 2-0 lead to the second.

The Pelicans scored their first run in the bottom of the second as BJ Murray doubled down the right-field line to lead off. He advanced to third on a flyout by Ezequiel Pagan and came home on a Preciado RBI single to right-center.

Three hits turned into three more runs for the Shorebirds in their half of the third. They loaded the bases for a second time on a single by Noelberth Romero, a walk to Bellony, and a De Leon single. Romero scored on a grounder to shortstop by Craig that turned into a force out at second. With runners on the corners, Craig stole second base and Bellony came home on a wild throw by catcher Miguel Fabrizio. Craig came in on a double from Moises Ramirez to left field to extend the Shorebirds' lead to 5-1.

Rain paused the game in the middle of the fourth inning as the game was pushed to Saturday. With more rain on Saturday, the game was completed on Sunday prior to the series finale.

The scoring continued for Delmarva on Sunday as three runs came in the top of the fifth. The bases loaded on two singles and a walk issued by Pelicans' reliever Jarod Wright. Ramirez was then hit by a pitch and Hernandez walked to score two runs and extend the Shorebirds' lead to 7-1. With one out, Prado hit a sacrifice fly to right for the third run of the frame.

The Pelicans got going with a three-run bottom of the sixth. Triantos singled and Kevin Alcantara walked to start before Murray grounded into a force-out at third. After Frank Hernandez flew out, Pagan singled to drive in Alcantara to make it 8-2 Shorebirds. Preciado came up and tripled to center field to plate two more runs and cut the lead down to 8-4.

Delmarva tacked on one more in the ninth on an RBI single by Deson to make it 9-4.

The Pelicans rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Shorebirds' pitcher Alejandro Mendez plated a run on a balk and Triantos hit a groundout to second to score another run. Alcantara walked to knock Mendez out of the game as Price replaced him. After a Murray flyout, Frank Hernandez singled to left to bring in Kevin Made as the lead was cut to two. Pagan followed with a ground ball into right field for an RBI single as Alcantara scored to make it 9-8 Shorebirds. The game ended on a Miguel Fabrizio strikeout as the Pelicans came one run short.

Game Two: Pagan (3-3, HR, 3B, 5 RBI, BB) stole the show by driving five runs in and falling a double shy of the cycle. Triantos (2-4, 3B, RBI, R) posted the only other multi-hit game with a triple. Myrtle Beach left just five runners on base for the game.

The Pelicans used just two arms in the seven-inning contest with Luis Devers (6-3) taking the win after allowing two earned runs off six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Johzan Oquendo finished the game with two innings of scoreless baseball with a walk and two strikeouts.

Luis Valdez (2-3, R) led the Delmarva lineup with a multi-hit game and a run scored while De Leon (1-2, RBI) posted the only RBI for a team that tallied six hits.

Four pitchers took the mound for the visitors with Daniel Lloyd (0-1) taking the loss after allowing six runs, five earned in his 2/3 of an inning off three hits and three walks. Shane Davis started and lasted the first four innings with two earned runs off three hits and three walks while striking out five.

For the third game in a row, the Shorebirds scored in their first at-bats. With runners on the corners and one out, Bellony grounded to first as Murray stepped on first and threw to second with Made putting on the tag for a double play. Valdez came home to score on the play to put the Shorebirds up 1-0.

The lead wouldn't last long as Myrtle Beach scored two in their half of the second. With two outs and a runner on first, Pagan lined a triple into the corner to score Murray as the Pelicans tied it up. Preciado followed with a single to center field to score Pagan and gave the Pelicans a 2-1 lead.

Delmarva loaded the bases in the top of the third and tied the game on a sacrifice fly to center from De Leon.

After a quiet fourth inning, the Pelicans exploded for a six-run fifth inning. After the first two batters grounded out, two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Murray. On five pitches, Murray walked to bring a run in and Wetzel followed with a walk to extend the Myrtle Beach lead to 4-2. A passed ball scored Alcantara and moved runners to second and third. Pagan cleared the bases on a single to right field as the Pelicans took a 7-2 lead. Pagan came around to score as Preciado reached on a throwing error by Martinez at second.

A finishing four runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth by the Pelicans. Triantos hit a triple to score Made after his leadoff single and Triantos scored a batter later on a wild pitch by Girard. With a runner on, Pagan smoked a home run to right field for his fifth RBI of the game and fourth home run of the season as the Pelicans took a 12-2 lead.

The Pelicans will travel to Zebulon to take on the Carolina Mudcats for a six-game series beginning on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
