MYRTLE BEACH, SC. -- The Shorebirds split the partial doubleheader on Sunday evening winning 9-8 in the continuation of the June 3 suspended game, but fell in the second contest 12-2 to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
In Game 1, a continuation of the June 3 game suspended in the fourth inning, the Shorebirds wasted no time adding on to their already 4-run lead plating 3 runs in their first turn up to bat in the top of the fifth.
To begin the frame, the 'Birds would load the bases, followed by Moises Ramirez getting hit by a pitch and a Brayan Hernandez walk to plate the first two runs of the inning. Shortly after, Elio Prado would earn the sacrifice fly scoring Trendon Craig and extending the Shorebirds lead to seven.
The Shorebirds would only score once more the rest of the contest, but was it a big run coming in the ninth inning. After a single from Hernandez, he would later come around to score in what turned out to be the game-winning run off an RBI single from Mishael Deson.
The Pelicans would not go down quietly scoring three runs in the sixth and four runs in the ninth to pull within one run. However, Preston Price was able to earn the save by stranding the bases loaded in the ninth and secure the 9-8 victory for the Shorebirds.
In Game 2, a seven-inning affair, the Shorebirds and Pelicans were tied until the bottom of the fifth at two apiece with the Shorebirds striking first.
In the first, Luis Valdez led off the game with a single, later coming around to score to give the Shorebirds the early 1-0 lead. After that, the Shorebirds would struggle to get the bats going in Game 2 only collecting six hits total in the contest and one more run on a sacrifice fly from Isaac De Leon in the third.
Shane Davis got the start on the bump for the Shorebirds giving up only two runs through four innings of work with five strikeouts. Unfortunately for Delmarva, they couldn't avoid the big inning as the Pelicans pushed six runs across in bottom half of the fifth to take control of the game and ultimately take the series.
The Shorebirds will be back home Tuesday to open up a six-game homestand against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, the Class-A Affiliate of the Houston Astros. The homestand features two fireworks shows, the first Wag Your Tail Tuesday presented by Delmarva K9, and so much more. Fans can purchase tickets at theshorebirds.com/tickets.
