Billings Mustangs News Release
Missoula, MT - Pitching dominated the evening at Allegiance Field as the Missoula Paddleheads (17-3) defeat the Billings Mustangs (8-12) 4-0.
Both sides got strong starts from their starting pitchers. Mustangs starter Gaylon Viney went 5 1/3 innings and struck out a season high seven. The first runs of the game didn't come until the sixth inning when Nick Gatewood connected on a pitch to dead center to give Missoula a 2-0 lead.
The Paddleheads tacked on another in the seventh after Dean Nevarez was hit by a pitch to bring home a run. Trevin Esquerra pinch hit in the eighth inning and drove in a run on the groundout to first.
For the first time in 2021, the Mustangs were shut out. A lot of that was due to the strong pitching Missoula received from its starter Andrew Bash. Bash was third in the league in ERA coming in and fired six innings of scoreless baseball while striking out eight.
The Mustangs could only muster four hits, three of which came in the first two innings. Rabon Martin, Jackson Sigman and Dazon Cole each completed scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
The Mustangs and Paddleheads face off tomorrow to decide the series winner. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM and don't forget to catch the pre-game show starting at 6:45 P.M. on ESPN Billings 910 AM/105.5 FM or online at espn910.com.
