Connecticut Whale News Release
Providence, RI, November 30, 2008: Brad Marchand's goal at 3:33 of overtime gave the Providence Bruins a 4-3 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence.
Marchand picked up a loose puck in front of the Wolf Pack goal and put a shot past the right leg of Wolf Pack goaltender Miika Wiikman, who had gone down flat on the ice to cover the lower portion of the net.
Defenseman Brian Fahey scored his first goal of the season for the Wolf Pack and also added an assist, and Hartford also got goals from Mike Ouellette and Artem Anisimov. Martin St. Pierre, Andrew Bodnarchuk and Martins Karsums also scored for Providence, and Byron Bitz contributed two assists.
Fahey scored his first goal in a Wolf Pack uniform at 5:57 of the first period to give Hartford the game's first lead. It was an unassisted goal for Fahey, as the veteran defenseman intercepted a Providence pass and found the back of the net from the right-wing circle. Bruin goaltender Tuukka Rask got a piece of the shot but could not stop it.
Martin St. Pierre replied for Providence at 14:20 of the first. St. Pierre took a pass from Bitz and, moving from right to left across the slot, put a slapshot past Wolf Pack starting netminder Matt Zaba. Bodnarchuk, a rookie defenseman, then gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead with his first pro goal. Bodnarchuk solved Zaba with a shot from below the left faceoff dot.
Miika Wiikman replaced Zaba for the start of the second period, and he was greeted by a Martins Karsums power-play goal at 6:17 of the middle frame. A shot by Matt Lashoff squirted through Wiikman's pads to the goal line, and Karsums tapped it in for his 10th of the year. The Wolf Pack answered that tally at 11:26, as Mike Ouellette deflected in Vladimir Denisov's blast from the right-wing point.
The Wolf Pack controlled most of the play in the third session, outshooting the Bruins by a margin of 12-8, and Hartford tied the game at 6:54. Fahey's shot from the left point was blocked, but Anisimov collected the rebound and backhanded it under the crossbar behind Rask.
The Bruins finished the game with a 34-32 shots advantage, with Rask making 29 saves to get the win. Wiikman ended up with the loss, with two goals-against on 22 shots, after Zaba allowed two goals on 12 shots in the first. The defeat was the Wolf Pack's first in six trips to overtime (2-1-3).
