Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins shutout the Worcester Sharks2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 6,848 fans. The P-Bruins received goals from Jordan Smotherman and Jeff Penner, while Matt Dalton earned his second shutout of the season with 45 saves.
The P-Bruins carried the momentum from their 3-2 win over Connecticut on Saturday into the first period against Worcester, testing net-minder Alex Stalock early and often in the opening minutes. Despite taking a shot to the body, Antoine Roussel returned his next shift and set up Smotherman for a one-timer from the slot to beat Stalock at 6:37 of the first. There was an onslaught of penalties from both teams to end the period, beginning when veteran enforcer Brian McGrattan dropped the mitts with Frazer McLaren in an extended battle that was decided when McLaren fell to the ice after taking a several rights from McGrattan.
Providence continued to test Stalock in the second period, drilling the rookie with shots right off the opening face-off. Penner beat Stalock five-hole on a breakaway after Kirk MacDonald found the defenseman rushing through the neutral zone. Lane MacDermid also assisted on the P-Bruins' second goal. The Providence forwards continued to dangle the Worcester defensemen, with the line of Max Sauvé, Jamie Arniel and Joe Colborneforcing Stalock to make acrobatic saves to keep the Sharks' deficit at two. The Sharks' offense began to crash Dalton hard at the end of the frame, causing numerous scuffles in front of the net and Andrew Bodnarchuk to drop the gloves and Tommy Wingels at 17:25 of the period.
Despite out-shooting Providence 20 to 4 in the third period, Dalton was flawless and kept Worcester off the board to hold on for his second shutout of the season and first star honors. Dalton was aided by the solid defensive play of the Providence blue-line, which continuously stoned the Sharks' scoring attempts en route to the 2-0 victory.
Dalton earned the shutout, blocking 45 shots, while Stalock suffered the loss, stopping 17 of 19 shots. Providence went 0-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins are next in action on Tuesday as they play their fourth game in five days, taking on Bridgeport at 7 p.m. in Connecticut. Providence returns to the Ocean State on Friday for Dunkin' Donuts Mug Night at 7:05 p.m. against Manchester. The mugs are free to the first 3,000 fans in attendance.
