Providence Bruins News Release

The Providence Bruins announced today that they have named Rob Murray as the team's Assistant Coach. The 36-year-old native of Toronto, Ontario recently retired from his 16-year playing career, during which he established himself as one of the AHL's all-time greats. Murray retired as one of six players in league history to have played 1,000 or more career games (1,018; sixth) and ranks second on the all-time list with 2,940 PIM. He played in 71 games for the Springfield Falcons in 2002-03, tallying 2-10-12 totals and 94 PIM.

"This is a great thrill to me, to begin my coaching career at the AHL level with a great organization like the Bruins," said Murray. "It's a little funny to start coaching in Providence after playing against the team as a division rival for so many years, but I'm thrilled and excited about this opportunity. I appreciate the Boston and Providence Bruins giving me this chance. I probably could have played again this season, but I felt that I was ready to take the next step into becoming a coach, and things couldn't have worked out better."

"We're fortunate to have someone like Rob on our coaching staff," said new Head Coach Scott Gordon. "He brings a wealth of experience in the AHL to our team. He was such a good defensive forward as a player, and was outstanding on faceoffs, so I think he's going to be able to impart knowledge of some important aspects of the game to our players. He was also someone who was an intense player who played with an edge, and it will be good for our players to benefit from his approach to the game."

Murray played junior hockey with the Peterborough Petes (OHL) for three seasons from 1984-87, and was selected by the Washington Capitals with their third pick, 61st overall, in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. He began his professional career with the Fort Wayne Komets (IHL) in 1987-88, posting 12-21-33 totals and 139 PIM in 80 games. He posted career-high 25-32-57 totals, along with 280 PIM, in 69 games with the Moncton Hawks (AHL) in 1993-94, leading the team to the Calder Cup Finals. Murray finished his career with 161-312-473 totals and 2,940 PIM in 1,018 career AHL games. He also notched 4-15-19 totals and 111 PIM in 107 career NHL games with Washington, the Winnipeg Jets and the Phoenix Coyotes.

Murray was recognized as a leader throughout his career. He was Moncton's captain for two years, from 1992-94. He also served as the Springfield Falcons' team captain from 1994-2000 before wearing the "C" for the Hamilton Bulldogs later in the 1999-2000 season and the Philadelphia Phantoms in 2000-01. Murray once again served as the Falcons' captain in 2002-03, his final season. He is also the Falcons' all-time leader in games played (501) and penalty minutes (1,529), and ranks first in assists (157), second in points (218), and fourth in goals (61).
