P-Bruins Fall to Wolf Pack in Overtime in Road Opener, 4-3

HARTFORD, CONN.- The Providence Bruins earned a point in the team's first road game of the year against the Hartford Wolf Pack at the XL Center on Wednesday night. It was a 4-3 victory in overtime for the home team, with Adam Tambellini scoring the game-winner.
The Bruins registered six shots in the first three minutes of the opening period and outshot Hartford 16-9 in the frame, though Hartford had the only goal. Former Worcester Sharks forward Travis Oleksuk picked up his own high shot behind the cage, then wrapped around to earn the home team the lead at 6:17. Tyler Brown registered the lone assist on the play. Later in the period, Eric Neiley caused a turnover at center ice and turned it into a breakaway, but Magnus Hellberg made the save.
In the second, Providence scored two goals on the team's first five shots, and outscored the Wolf Pack 3-2. Colby Cave notched his first AHL goal at 5:12 unassisted. In a similar manner to Neiley, he took the puck from center ice and outskated everybody to beat Hellberg.
Zack Phillips gave the P-Bruins the lead with a slapshot from the right wing circle 0:18 into a power play later in the period. After starting the season 0-for-6 on the man advantage, Providence was 4-for-its-last-5 including Phillips' bid at 12:56.
Hartford tied the game up later in the second thanks to former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Brian Gibbons, who smashed a rebound home after a failed clearing attempt by the Bruins defense with 1:37 left. Only 0:16 later, Frank Vatrano put the visitors right back in front. Matt Irwin threw it from the left point, and the puck was deflected in the slot. Vatrano went shortside on Hellberg with a wrister to give Providence a brief 3-2 edge.
Only 0:19 after that, Marek Hrivik found the puck on a ricochet, then launched it on net. Chris McCarthy's tip hit both posts and went in to tie the game.
Neither team could muster a goal in the third, as Providence again outshot Hartford 12-5. The P-Bruins had two power plays in the frame, and Noel Acciari generated chances on a couple of rushes, though Hellberg held him scoreless.
In overtime, the Bruins committed a penalty early, giving the Wolf Pack a 4-on-3 man advantage with 3:51 remaining. Tambellini drove through a pair of Bruins defenders and zipped a shot past Zane McIntyre to end the game.
The Bruins play next on Friday at 7:05pm at the Dunk against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
