Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins tonight by a final score of 5-2 in game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, ending their 2013-2014 season. Alexander Khokhlachev scored twice, while David Warsofsky, Ryan Spooner registered a goal and assist each as the P-Bruins furious comeback attempt fell short. Niklas Svedberg stopped 11 of 15 shots, and Malcolm Subban registered 11 saves on 12 shots in relief of Svedberg.
1st Period Scoring Summary: No scoring plays.
2nd Period Scoring Summary: WB/Scranton jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the period when Anton Zlobin scored for the Penguins, assisted by Jayson Megna...Just 2:07 later, Conor Sheary scored on the power play, assisted by Nick Drazenovic and Chuck Kobasew, for a 2-0 lead...The Penguins increased the lead to 3-0 1:58 seconds later when Jayson Megna scored on a feed from Harry Zolnierczyk...WB/Scranton registered their fourth goal of the period at the 5:35 mark when Brian Gibbons scored unassisted to make it 4-0...at the 7:16 mark and on the power play, the Penguins capped their scoring for the period when Tom Kostopoulos scored to make it 5-0, assisted by Brendan Mikkelson and Simon Despres...Providence finally got on the board in the final minute of the period when David Warsofsky netted a short handed goal, assisted by Frankie Simonelli and Andrew Cherniwchan, to make it a 5-1 game.
3rd Period Scoring Summary: Providence began a furious comeback attempt just :23 seconds into the period when Ryan Spooner scored on an assist by Blake Parlett, making the deficit 5-2...Alexander Khokhlachev registered his 8th of the playoffs at the 6:43 mark, assisted by David Warsofsky and Tommy Cross, to cut the Penguins lead to 5-3... 3:12 later Khokhlachev struck again on the power play, putting a pass from Ryan Spooner in the back of the net to make the score 5-4.
Notes: Providence finished the game 1 for 3 on the powerplay...P-Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg stopped 11 of 15 shots, but was pulled in favor of in the second period... Malcolm Subban stopped 11 of 12 shots in relief of Svedberg...WB/Scranton finished the game 2 for 6 on the powerplay...Penguins goaltender Peter Mannino stopped 21 of 25 shots...Penguins forward Jayson Megna was selected as first star of the game, with WB/Scranton forward Brian Gibbons as second star and forward Tom Kostopoulos as third star...With the loss the Providence Bruins are eliminated from the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs, ending their season in the same fashion as the year prior - a game 7 loss in the Eastern Conference Semifinals to the WB/Scranton Penguins.
