P-Bruins Fall to Monarchs in Season Opener

Providence, R.I. -- The Providence Bruins fell to the Manchester Monarchs 3-1 in their 2012-13 season home opener on Friday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Jamie Tardif scored the lone goal for Providence.

Providence opened their first period of the new season with high energy, but despite shooting to a quick lead in shot totals, the P-Bruins didn't take a clear possession of the game. The back and forth stayed at a steady pace until the eight minute mark, when Monarchs' forward Jordan Weal got called for tripping. While the shots kept coming, Manchester goalie Martin Jones stood tall in net and didn't allow the P-Bruins to utilize their extra man. The Monarchs' penalty kill unit came close, with a hard shot that ricocheted off the inside goal post and was quickly grabbed up by P-Bruins' goaltender, Michael Hutchinson. Manchester saw their first power play of the night from a Matt Bartkowski hooking call, but like the P-Bruins, were unable to pull through. The P-Bruins' energy finally came to a head with a Tardif goal at 15:38. Capitalizing on a rebound, Tardif slipped the puck past Jones, assisted by Ryan Spooner and Maxime Sauvé. The goal was Tardif's first of the season and put Providence up 1-0. As the period wound down, Carter Camper saw himself alone in front of the Manchester net, but was unable to get it past Jones.

The second period started with the same tone as the first, and saw Providence go on the power play relatively early off a Thomas Hickey high sticking call. The P-Bruins were once again unable to capitalize with the advantage, and saw their power play time out with no added goals on the scoreboard. With five minutes to go in the period, the action picked up as Bobby Robins delivered a punishing hit behind the Manchester net, and soon answered to the fists of Jordan Nolan. After an uncharacteristically even fight, both went off with fighting majors, and Robins saw an extra two for charging. Both teams squandered their power play, but the P-Bruins got another chance with two to go left in the period. With Richard Clume off on a holding penalty, the P-Bruins went to the power play, but instead of their goal light coming on, it was Manchester with the tally. With 16.8 seconds on the clock, Andrei Loktionov put the Monarchs on the board on a shorthanded goal, assisted by former P-Bruin Andrew Bodnarchuk and Jake Muzzin. The goal was Loktionov's first of the season, and ended the period in a 1-1 tie.

Manchester took control of the third period with an early goal from Andy Andreoff on the power play, breaking the tie and putting the Monarchs up 2-1. He was assisted by Brandon Kozun and Muzzin. The P-Bruins soon after found themselves with a 5-on-3 advantage, but failed to get themselves back on the board. Late into the period, Linden Vey ripped a shot past Hutchinson on a centering pass from Stefan Legein, putting the Monarchs up 3-1. The go-ahead goal was Vey's first of the season. Providence pulled their goalie for an extra man, but the help was futile as the game buzzed out in a 3-1 Providence loss.

Providence will travel to the Webster Bank Arena on Saturday, October 13 to face off against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 p.m. The P-Bruins return to The Dunk on Friday, October 26 in a 7:05 p.m. matchup with Springfield for the 3 rd Annual Pink in the Rink Night.
