
P-Bruins Defeat Pirates 5-1

Portland, ME - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 5-1 Sunday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The P-Bruins got their goals from Martin St. Pierre, Brad Marchand, Vladimir Sobotka and two goals from Johnny Boychuk. The P-Bruins lead the best of seven series 2 games to 1. The P-Bruins continue the Calder Cup Playoffs at the Cumberland County Civic Center Thursday versus the Pirates at 7:00 p.m.
Providence took a 1-0 lead at the 13:58 mark of the opening period. Marchand created a 2-on-1 advantage for the P-Bruins and sent the puck to St. Pierre, who was open at the right face off circle. He blasted the puck into the net for his first goal of the post-season. Providence went into the first intermission leading 1-0.
The P-Bruins took a 2-0 lead 59 seconds into the second period. Sobotka chipped the puck out of the neutral zone to St. Pierre giving the P-Bruins another 2-on-1 advantage. St. Pierre sent the puck to Marchand in the right face off circle and he fired the puck into the net top shelf for his first post-season goal. Providence went ahead 3-0, while shorthanded at the 3:16 mark. Boychuk stole the puck along the boards and found Sobotka in the slot, who netted his second goal of the post-season. The P-Bruins grabbed a 4-0 lead at the 7:33 mark, while on the power play. St. Pierre held the puck behind the net and passed it up the boards to Sobotka. He shuffled it to Boychuk at the blue line who scored his first goal of the post-season. The P-Bruins led 4-0 after two periods.
In the third period, Providence took a 5-0 lead on their second power play goal of the game. Sobotka had the puck halfway up the boards and fed Jeff Penner at the left point. He found Boychuk at the right point and Boychuk scored his second goal of the game. Portland got on the board late at the 11:57 mark. Derek Whitmore netted his first goal of the point season, with Kenny MacAulay and Felix Schutz recording the assists. Providence went on to the 5-1 victory.
Tuukka Rask stopped 25 of 26 shots for the P-Bruins, while Jhonas Enroth made 20 saves and Kellen Briggs 19 saves for the Pirates. Â The P-Bruins were 2-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
