Marlies Counter With 2-1 Victory
April 19, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose dropped a 2-1 decision to the Toronto Marlies at the Ricoh Coliseum on Sunday afternoon, allowing Toronto to take a 2-1 series lead. Alexandre Bolduc scored the lone goal for Manitoba, while Cory Schneider stopped 26 of Toronto's attempts. Game 4 will be played on Tuesday night, also at the Ricoh Coliseum.
At 4:38 the Marlies earned their first powerplay when Guillaume Desbiens was penalized for interference. Planted in the Moose zone, Ryan Hamilton slapped a rebound passed Cory Schneider to open the scoring and earn Toronto's first powerplay goal of the series.
The Moose opened the second period on the powerplay thanks to a roughing call against Alex Foster. Tallying three shots on the man-advantage the Moose weren't able to crack Justin Pogge in the short two-minutes.
With five minutes left to go in the second, Michael Grabner danced around the Marlies defenders and was free on a breakaway, but his attempt was denied by Pogge's glove. At 16:48 Alexandre Bolduc finally broke Manitoba's goose-egg, with help from Dusty Collins and Nathan McIver, and tied the game at one before heading into the final period.
The third period saw early scoring action from the Marlies. Tim Stapleton flew down Schneider's left side and tricked the goaltender with a fake shot before slipping the puck just off his glove to break the tie, 2-1.
With a minute left in play, and with the Moose leading in shots 31-27, the visitors battled to tie the game and force overtime. With four seconds left to play, Jamie Sifers' cross-checking penalty combined with pulling Schneider put the Moose on a 6-on-4 advantage. The Moose won the draw and managed to fire a shot just wide of Pogge's net, but the game expired before they could tie the contest and the Moose fell to the Marlies 2-1.
