P-Bruins Are Regular Season Champs

April 10, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The American Hockey League announced today that the Providence Bruins have won the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the AHL's 2007-08 regular season points champion. The P-Bruins clinched first-place overall with a 6-1 win over the Worcester Sharks Wednesday night at the DCU Center.

The Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy is the latest in a long line of Providence team and individual honors earned over the course of the season. On April 5, with a 2-1 shootout win over the Lowell Devils, the club clinched the Emile Francis Trophy as the Atlantic Division champions, as well as the Frank S. Mathers Trophy as the regular-season champions of the Eastern Conference. The P-Bruins have since received a pair of individual awards with head coach Scott Gordon getting the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the league's outstanding coach. Goaltender Jordan Sigalet, meanwhile, received the Fred T. Hunt Memorial Award for sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey.

At 54-16-3-4 for 115 points and three games remaining this weekend, the P-Bruins have a chance to match the all-time AHL record for victories (57), set by the 1992-93 Binghamton Rangers (57-13-10, 124 points). Providence can also eclipse its own franchise marks of 56 wins and 120 points, both set during the club's 1998-99 Calder Cup championship campaign, the last season the P-Bruins finished first in the AHL regular season standings.

As a result of clinching the league's top points-total, Providence will have home-ice advantage throughout the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs, beginning with the best-of-seven Atlantic Division Semi-Finals series against the Manchester Monarchs.

Instituted in 1997, the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy honors the late Macgregor Kilpatrick, a member of the AHL Board of Governors for 27 years. Kilpatrick also served as the league's senior vice president and general counsel during his tenure, and earned the James C. Hendy Award in 1976 as the league's outstanding executive.

The P-Bruins return to action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center to start a home-and-home series with Manchester on Friday for Team Poster Giveaway Night at 7:05 p.m. The posters, free to the first 3,000 fans in attendance, are courtesy of ABC 6, University Orthopedics, Dunkin' Donuts and your New England Dodge Dealers. Saturday's game at Manchester's Verizon Wireless Arena begins at 7:05 p.m. The regular season ends on Sunday at home versus Lowell at 4:05 p.m. The contest is a Family Game, as fans can purchase one ticket, one hot dog and one soda for just $16.

2008 Calder Cup Playoff Packages are on sale now with Providence set to take on Manchester in the Atlantic Division Semi-Finals, beginning with Game 1 on Wednesday, April 16 at The Dunk. To purchase tickets or for more information, call the Providence Bruins ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or log on to the team website at www.providencebruins.com.
