Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland's Chris Oxspring struck out eight and allowed just one hit over 6.0 shutout innings, and Jon Knott homered and drove in three runs to lead the Beavers to a 8-0 win over the Tucson Sidewinders Tuesday night at chilly PGE Park.
It was Oxspring's second straight impressive start against Tucson. The Australian pitching prospect is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA (1er, 13.0ip) in two wins over the Sidewinders over the last week, striking out a combined 18 batters.
Oxspring, the San Diego Padres No. 11 prospect according to Baseball America, issued two walks and gave up a third-inning single to Juan Brito.
Bernie Castro drove in a pair, while Knott, Henri Stanley and Humberto Quintero each had two hits for the Beavers, who improved to 5-8.
Tucson (8-4) had won six of its last seven games since losing two straight to the Beavers, April 10-11.
Edgar Gonzalez (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs (4 earned) on five hits and five walks in 4.0 innings in his third start.
Steady rains prevailed before the game, delaying its start by 10 minutes, and returned in the seventh inning with game conditions dipping into the 40s.
The two teams continue their series Wednesday night at PGE Park in a 7:05 p.m. start.
