Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- J.R. House belted Nashville's first grand slam of the 2004 season but the Sounds came up on the short end of a 12-4 loss to the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes on Wednesday afternoon in front of 4,231 fans at Greer Stadium.
Albuquerque got off to a quick start against Nashville starter John VanBenschoten, plating four runs during a two-out, bases loaded rally in the top of the first inning for a 4-0 lead. Billy Hall and Derek Wathan singled with one down before Larry Sutton drew a walk to fill the bags. VanBenschoten fanned Matt Padgett before allowing a pair of two-run singles to Chris Aguila and Matt Treanor.
The Isotopes added to the lead in the third, using three hits and two Sounds errors to extend the advantage to 7-0 and chase VanBenschoten from the game. With one out, Padgett singled to center and scored one batter later when Aguila's grounder to third resulted in an overthrow by Nashville third baseman Chris Truby. Drew Niles plated the inning's second run with an RBI triple down the right-field line. Albuquerque starting pitcher chased VanBenschoten two batters later with an RBI single to center to run the Isotopes' lead to seven.
Albuquerque tacked on a run against Sounds reliever Chris Fussell in the fifth when Aguila scored on a Kevin Hooper fielder's choice.
House halved the Albuquerque lead with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth, blasting a 1-1 offering from Isotopes reliever Peter Hartmann over the left field wall for a grand slam. The roundtripper was House's third of the season and second in as many games against Albuquerque.
Albuquerque plated four insurance runs in the ninth against Hector Almonte to complete the scoring.
Nannini (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing two runs and fanning six batters over five frames. VanBenschoten (0-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in his 2 1/3 innings of work. The Pittsburgh Pirates' top prospect has logged a 12.34 ERA in his three starts this season.
The Sounds and Isotopes meet again at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening in the third game of the four-game series. Nashville left-hander Cory Stewart (1-0), who ranks 5th in the Pacific Coast League with a 1.50 ERA, is scheduled to face Albuquerque southpaw Michael Tejera (0-0).
