Owlz Score Early, Often in First Win of Season
June 22, 2013 - Pioneer League (PL)
Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
In last night's season opener against Idaho Falls, the Orem Owlz produced three hits and no runs. Friday night against the Chukars, the Owlz had three hits and three runs before their second offensive out of the game.
Orem put up four runs in the first - the team's highest scoring inning of the night - and led the rest of the way in a 14-10 victory.
In his first at bat in the minor leagues, right fielder Eric Aguilera hit a three-run homer to open the scoring for Orem (1-1, 1-1 Pioneer League South) just four batters into the game. The former Illinois State Redbird finished with a team-high four RBI. Aguilera and the Owlz offense combined for nine runs in the first three innings, which featured six of the team's eight extra-base hits.
Catcher Cambric Moye hit a two-run homer in the 5th to make the score 11-7, and he was the only Owlz batter to record multiple RBI other than Aguilera. Center fielder Riley Good led the Owlz with four hits, and tied second baseman Kody Eaves with a team-high three runs scored. The Owlz hit 7-for-16 with runners in scoring position, and stranded only six on the basepaths in an 18-hit outing.
Right-hander Arjenis Fernandez got the start for Orem, and gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out two Idaho Falls (1-1, 1-1 Pioneer League South) hitters. Daniel Hurtado (1-0) and Trevor Foss struck out two batters each and Harrison Cooney pitched a three-up-three-down 8th to slow down the Chukars offense and allow Orem to build a lead.
Down 14-7, Idaho Falls made a promising rally in the 9th with three runs prior to the first out of the inning. Facing runners on first and third with no outs, Brian Loconsole struck out Chukars center fielder Daniel Rockett before yielding the mound to Garrett Bush (SV - 1), who earned his first save of the season by retiring the only two batters he faced.
Ashton Goudeau (0-1) started the game for Idaho Falls and threw 2.1 innings, conceding 10 hits and nine runs (eight earned) with two strikeouts. Six Chukars batters came through with multiple hits and second baseman Carlos Garcia led the home side with four RBI.
The Owlz return to Orem for their home opener Saturday night against the Grand Junction Rockies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. MDT. To listen live, go to audio.oremowlz.com.
