Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
Eddie Sipple struck out Keenyn Walker with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs to allow the Owlz to pick up their 20th win and narrowly escape with a 8-7 victory over the Great Falls Voyagers.
"That's not how it was scripted, but we are lucky we had the lead," said Manager Tom Kotchman.
Five Owlz players had multiple hits to give the Owlz (20-15) an offensive boost. Abel Baker, Gary Mitchell and Jerod Yakubik each had two hits, Frazier Hall had three and Trevor Hairgrove went 4-for-4. However, it was Yakubik who impressed Kotchman after the game.
"The guy who squared up the ball tonight was Yakubik. He's been a very valuable piece of the team that I had no idea about to start the season."
Yakubik finished 2-for-4 with two runs and 2 RBIs. The biggest hit from him came in the 6th inning when he drove in two on a double with two outs. The Owlz had five two-out RBIs in tonight's win.
The Owlz scored early once again, getting two runs in the bottom of the 1st on Abel Baker's two-out 2 RBI double. However, the Voyagers (16-19) kept coming back. Great Falls fell behind twice in the first three innings, and managed to tie the game both times. The Owlz put the game away with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and one in the 7th.
Logan Odom was only able to go 3.1 innings, but Erik Gregersen (2-0) threw 2.2 innings, giving up one run and striking out five. Shane Waller relieved him and threw two perfect innings.
Aaron Tullo ran into trouble in the 9th, giving up two walks and hitting two batters, but Eddie Sipple was able to get Walker to strike out to end the game.
The Owlz have now taken four out of six from the Voyagers and will go for the series sweep tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
