David Herndon pitched six solid innings, only allowing four hits and one unearned run as the Owlz defeated the White Sox 4-1 Wednesday evening in Orem.
Herndon worked quickly and efficiently, striking out six batters and lowering his ERA to 2.13 while obtaining his team best fifth win of the season.
"You can't ask for anything more. When a guy only throws sixty pitches through six innings you know he's on top of his game," said Manager Tom Kotchman.
Orem took the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Ryan Mount led off with a single. Following an Abel Nieves walk, Chris Pettit hit a ground rule double down the right field line bringing Mount in to score and earning his team leading 44th RBI. Tadd Brewer would later single to bring in the second run.
Leading 2-1, the Owlz would strike again in the bottom of the fourth inning as Tyler Johnson reached on a bunt single. He would advance to second on an errant pick-off throw by pitcher Ramon Sanchez. He would later be brought around to score on a Ryan Mount single past a diving John Shelby through the right side.
In the bottom of the fifth the Owlz would get their fourth and final run as Chris Pettit led off with his second double of the game. He advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Luis Rivera and scored on a Scott Knazek double over the head of Sox left fielder Lee Cruz.
Great Falls got their only run of the game in the fourth inning. Cruz singled to lead off the frame. Chris Carter then hit a sharp ground ball to second baseman Tadd Brewer but Brewer booted the ball, allowing Cruz to reach third. John Shelby then grounded into a double play allowing the run to cross the plate unearned.
Orem got three innings of scoreless relief from the bullpen capped by Felipe Arredondo's 10th save of the season.
With the win, Orem takes 3 of 4 from Great Falls and wins the season series against the White Sox 4 to 3.
The Owlz now head to Idaho Falls for a three game series with the Chukars before returning home for the final five games of the series.
