Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - Righthander Micah Owings kept Tucson's hot streak going in his TEP debut, allowing just one run in 6 2/3 innings as the Sidewinders cruised to a 5-1 victory of Las Vegas. After throwing 6 innings of no-hit ball in his Triple-A debut, Owings was greeted by a leadoff single to centerfielder Jeff Duncan to open the game, snapping the streak. Duncan was picked off from first a batter later by catcher Juan Brito and Owings allowed just 7 batters to reach the rest of the evening while fanning 4.
The 51s only damage came in the 2nd inning when cleanup hitter Delwyn Young hit a solo shot into the rightfield bullpen to give Las Vegas the early 1-0 lead. Young's trip around the bases marked the only time a 51s player touch 3rd base all evening, with just three runners reaching second base.
Tucson struck back in the bottom of the 2nd. Brian Barden doubled to center to leadoff the inning and was moved over to 3rd on a groundout. After a strikeout Micah Owings helped his own cause with an RBI single up the middle. Alberto Callaspo put the Sidewinders up for good with a double to left-center, driving in Owings from first.
It was all Sidewinders from there on with each member of the starting lineup tallying at least one base hit. Tucson scored two more runs in the 3rd on RBI singles by Kenny Perez and Brito. Tucson tacked on another on three hits in the 4th when Chris Carter drove in Matt Erickson on a single through the hole in the left side to cap the scoring.
Erickson had a season high three hits as a late addition to the lineup, including his 2nd and 3rd doubles of the year.
Owings improved to 2-0 in his two Triple-A outings. Sidewinders relievers Jeff Bajenaru and Mike Bacsik combined to complete the victory, striking out three in 2 1/3 innings. Las Vegas starter Spike Lundberg fell to 0-2 by allowing all five of Tucson runs in four innings of work.
The win increased Tucson's Las Vegas in the Southern Division to nine games. Elsewhere Sacramento, who lost to Salt Lake, fell 10 back of the Sidewinders who have now rallied off 15 wins in their last 17 contests.
The Sidewinders will take on Las Vegas for the second of the five game set tomorrow, when righthander Dustin Nippert (8-2, 4.50) faces 51s righty Spike Lundberg (0-1, 7.20). The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 7:00pm.
