Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
The Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs has announced the 2014 Eastern League Year-End All-Star Team. The 13-player roster features Portland Sea Dogs pitcher Henry Owens as the team's left-handed pitcher. The team is voted on by respective Eastern League team managers and coaching staffs, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media.
In 20 starts with the Sea Dogs this season, Owens produced a 14-4 record with a 2.60 ERA (35 ER/ 121.0 IP) and 126 strikeouts. He earned a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket on August 1st. Despite the August 1st promotion, Owens leads the league in wins (14), strikeouts (126), complete games (3), shutouts (2), and average against (.201). He also ranks third in the league in ERA (2.60) and fourth in WHIP (1.12).
Owens is the first player in Sea Dogs franchise history to win 14 games in a single season. He also established new franchise records by hurling 27.2 consecutive scoreless innings from May 19 through June 14 and winning nine consecutive starts from May 24 through July 19. Owens opened the 2014 season by firing a rain-shortened complete game no-hitter against the Reading Fightin Phils. He was selected to play in the MLB All-Star Futures Game and was named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star.
Entering the 2014 season, Baseball America rated Owens as the top pitching prospect and No. 2 prospect overall in the Red Sox organization, the No. 40 prospect in baseball and the No. 2 left-handed pitching prospects.
Owens, a native of Huntington Beach, California, was selected by the Red Sox in the supplemental round (36th overall) of the June 2011 draft.
